After Colonoscopy Spasms and Watery Diarrhea

same thing happened to me in august, kat. i got so ill from my colonoscopy. i'm not sure if it was the colonoscopy itself or the new medication cocktail i had in my IV. i was a mess though- throwing up daily, horrid abdominal cramping, gas, tons of diarrhea. the only thing that helped me was starting paleo, but since you are doing SCD, that is about the same. have you thought about doing the intro diet again- LOTS of yogurt? i think the prep messed up your bacteria really bad.

i usually eat 6 oz of yogurt a day now so 1.5 cups is a lot to me already. definitely stick with that. it'll probably take a little while for your gut to calm down again. i know elaine recommends up to 2 cups a day. have you tried kefir? i was just reading that it has even more probiotics than yogurt.

if you're having a lot of diarrhea, i'm not sure how long the canasa would even stay in. you could try it after you go and see if you can hold it in. they dissolve eventually because our anal canal is so warm. the longest i've ever been able to keep it in is 30 minutes and most of the capsule is still intact.

Do you have insurance? If so ask for a script for VSL#3DS-it is a probiotic and it will help. I had the same issue after my last c-scope. Still dealing with trying to get into remission. I was told to take Align (probiotic-OTC) but VSL is better. It usually takes me about 2 weeks to recover from my prep. How much of your colon is involved?

@joanna what brands of supplements do you take? Did you decide on those supplements yourself or was a doc involved?

i was def. worse after colonoscopy. It took me a few months before I was back to "my" normal. I am afraid to ever do one again. I will say though the very first one was fine for me after, so I guess every scope reaction is different.

@garylouisville I am no doc but my doc said the same thing and my record is to get it only if absolutely necessary (e.g. You need surgery and need to confirm or else you'll die). Before my colonoscopy, I was very wary of getting one and figured gut flora would be disrupted and I'd have to start from scratch. I should have went with y gut because that's what I see is happening. Seriously, no joke, I had 2 cups of SCD yogurt and homemade chicken broth, and I stopped having diarrhea and my colon is tired but happy now. Wow. Amazed! Thanks again @bananasgirl

Thanks so much. My bms have slowed down, but colon still acting crazy. I slept and then it woke me up an hour later. Patience! Haha perseverance

Today is one week since my Colonoscopy. Five years ago was my first, had no issues. Used small bottles of medication to clean out colon with no after effects. In the media heard later that these were banned because of kidney disorders associated with their use. This time I received a jug and powder which cleaned my colon so well that it destroyed all the natural bacteria we need. I had diarrhea and vomiting for days, starting the Wednesday after the Monday procedure. When I called my doctors office, not knowing what was wrong, and scared that something had gone wrong in the procedure, his assistant got back to me with his recommendation of a CT Scan. I made the appointment, which I later cancelled after doing my homework on the internet. I was getting weaker by the day. My husband purchased lots of yogurt, picked up some Pedialyte and had me eat a small amount of bland food every few hours. The nausea stopped and the cramps and bloating went away, the diarrhea is finally subsiding. What upsets me is that NO ONE gave me any documentation or warning that this could happen!!!!!! AND, then recommended a CT Scan???!!!!!! There was no bleeding. The post from the woman whose father has gone thru this brought tears to my eyes....I pray he has gotten thru this. :(
