Has anyone had positive experience with this new 5 asa med. I was considering requesting it from my doctor because I have frequently been seeing asacol hd in my bowl movements undissolved. I also think I will be requesting a pred taper since that has worked getting me out of flares in the past and my patience for my current treatment is wearing thin.

I'm on it. I switched from regular Asacol to Apriso, mostly because I wanted to just take pills once a day. I knew I'd forget doses of Asacol and also knew that missing doses increases one's chance of flaring. I was in remission when I switched and I'm still in remission.

One thing to remember about Apriso is that it has a much lower dose of mesalamine than the other mesalamine drugs. However, it supposedly dissolves more effectively, but I really don't know how true that is. At any rate, if I flare again, I might switch to regular Asacol or Asacol HD to treat the flare.

Do you also use rectal meds? If not, I think you should try using mesalamine enemas before you use prednisone.

I was taking rectal meds but after my colonoscopy my anus was sore and part of it would swell up on the outside. So out of paranoia over that I have been a week or two off of rectals. That is most likely why I am having worse inflammation oral is not breaking down and not using the rectals. I will start back on them now because I realize it was foolish to discontinue them I just didn't want to hurt my butt.

I used to take Apriso and had terrible hair loss with it. Literally small clumps falling out. Not good. If you google that side effect you will see the links. Not something the docs really talk about. My doc switched me to Lialda and that was somewhat better. Now I just use rectal meds as needed since oral meds don't reach where my colitis is located (left side, up to 40 cm).

I was on Asacol for the first year and the doctor said it effected the top part of my colon but wasnt getting down far enough so he changed to the coated Apriso. Ive been on Apriso for almost 2 years now and I havent had any side effects whatsoever that Ive been able to notice. It stopped my internal bleeding, but I still was going to the bathroom at least ten times on a good day and up to 21 time on a bad day.
