I figured I'd jump in here and add my 2 cents to this thread. I've been down this same path as you and suffered the consequences of the store-bought protein drinks as well. Also discovered that whey protein doesn't agree with my system for some reason, perhaps lactose intolerance. So I personally go with egg white protein or pea protein. I purchase the "Now Foods" brand because they don't contain anything at all except the protein powder and they're lower cost compared to some of the others. For whey protein I've heard that the Optimum Nutrition "Natural Whey" line is one of the best if you're attempting to avoid some of the typical additives and chemicals found in most whey protein powders.
Every morning for breakfast I mix in a blender:
- 1 scoop protein powder
- 4-6 oz apple or orange juice (not from concentrate and with no added ingredients - Tropicana or Simply brands are good examples that are widely available)
- 1 tspn l-glutamine powder
- 1 small banana
- 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
- 1 tbsp virgin coconut oil
I've got the preparation down to 1 minute flat as I'm rushing out the door to go to work. Tastes almost like a Jamba Juice drink, doesn't upset my UC, and good for you too. =)
I originally got the idea from this video, but put my own twist on it:
