"Food Hospital" on Cooking Channel

A few nights ago I watched a show called "Food Hospital" and the episode was about a college-aged student, a dance (modern dance) diagnosed with Chron's - it looked really severe because it was causing skin lesions and lots of other problems.

The premise of the show is to treat medical conditions with food / diet. It looked interesting, but she said something that worried me. When they asked her how often her Chron's would "bother her" or "flare," she said, "oh, about once a month." When they asked her what she did when that happened, she said, "oh, take some steroids."

WHAT? That makes no sense to me, at all. Taking steroids like that chronically, no mention of any other treatment, once a month flares? It takes way longer than 3 weeks to heal a flare, right?

I'm so confused. If any one else caught it I'd love to hear your take.

It does sound like an interesting show but the whole thing reminds me of when I went to see Brad Garrett do a stand up comic routine. Someone in the audience asked him to dance like he did on some TV show and he finally had to confess that he couldn't do it - saying that it was done with a green screen and illusions. He went on to tell the audience about a secret he wanted to share - tv isn't real!

Maybe she meant she would use a steroid enema? That's my best guess...

My brother/best friends wife's mother has crohn's and takes no medicine. She just deals with the chronic diarrhea. I tried to explain to her daughter, also my friend, that she has a risk for it, but she refuses to believe me.

Stupid people are out there, I try to avoid them.

Boo hiss, Ill have to find it somewhere online. We have several channels devoted to food here, but of course nothing like this in America

"Shaw put Laura on an innovative diet devised by Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge to see if the need for steroids can be eliminated by the treatment that this diet could provide. A study from the 1990s showed that 56% of sufferers who followed this food plan were in remission for at least 2 years. Laura’s food plan involved taking a liquid diet of 8 cartons daily known as The Elemental Diet, which is only available on prescription, for four weeks.
