Hello all. I wanted to run this past my fellow UCers before making any decisions, as I trust your opinions equally, if not more, than my GI.
I've been in a flare since November. Been taking prednisone and sulfasalazine. Started at 60 mg of prednisone, and have tapered down to 20. Symptoms have been pretty good the past weeks, although I know I'm not out of the woods yet.
I had a colonoscopy yesterday which revieled active UC in the cecum, left colon, and rectum. Not a big suprise on my part.
In the past, my UC gets fairly bad during a bout, but when in remission I have no symptoms at all, and usually I can go years without a flare.
In the past I've had really good success on rectal meds. I haven't been able to use them with this flare yet, due to lack of insurance. However, I just became eligible for insurance again, and think it would be a good idea to throw them into the mix.
My GI, after my scope, wants to put me on Humira. I'm really hesitant to use this drug. I think that I could get into remission fairly quick, but I'm not crazy about
being on it for a long duration. Especially when I'm in remission.
What would you do? Try the rectal meds for a while and continue to taper the prednisone or jump on the Humira?
Thanks all :)

Rectal meds first, for sure.

avoid humira at ALL costs. do anything but that first and see if it works.

I am on Humira and would WAIT. The rectal meds quit working for me (ones that my GI offered & insurnace covered).
Defintiely give the rectal meds a good go first. I wound up on Humira for Rheumatoid arthtitis, chronic sytemic inflammation & psoriasis along with the UC. But the primary reason is my UC. My other issues are gone - my UC is worse & has been since the first injection.
Going for surgery consult 3/7 -

I tried humira for 3 months w/ no luck. However my GI says that they have had lots of UC patients that use it successfully. I tried it before Remicade.
All that said I would give the enemas a go first to see if they help.

"that stuff will kill someone!"
if you stab an intruder in the neck with the humira pen several times, most likely he will die.

Haha...very good somedude :) ^^^
If I would've listened to my GI's over the past years, I would've had my colon removed long ago.
And evertime I've managed to get back into remission...and been very thankful I never pulled that trigger.
I'm definately going to try the enemas, and ask my GI about
Uceris. I'm pretty sure she's not gonna be happy with my decision, but it's mine to make.
Also..I had some bad reactions to Azathioprin and 6-mp in the past. Don't really think Humira is gonna be my saving grace. At least not yet.
