Whats a GI? quick question

Quick question. been on this forum a while, and I've racked my brains but what the heck does GI stand for?

assume, doctor, or specialist in gastroenterology, but the actual definition not a clue.

in the UK, I just see a my specialist who works in the gastroenterology department of the hospital. or GP, general practitioner or family doctor.

I remember once calling the hospital asking to speak to the "gastr, gasro, gastronotorologygy" until the receptionist had to ask if i meant gastroenorology.

i think it's because they study the gastrointestinal track... hence GI.

Just a funny side note, my 17 year old daughter wanted to be a doctor. She had her specialty and sub specialty picked out. She wanted to be a pediatric gastroenterologist. She has such a hard time saying gastroenterologist, that I had to sort of tease and tell her; how are you going to be a GI if you can't pronounce the name??

But yes, that is what GI stands for: gastroenterologist.

I'm in the UK as well but am from Canada. When I first came here and asked at the hospital reception where is the GI unit I got a proper Lewisham looks that says what the...

I mean the hospital I was treated for in Canada was very big and the GI department had the whole 7th floor! So when I came to Lewisham hospital and the GI department was only a few offices and the doctors shared their offices with cardiologists! So most patients waiting were either breathing or farting heavily.

But no one got away from this 5 feet tall nurse that would weight you in front of everybody and shout you are overweight!

We moved to Surrey since....

that's horrid! but a beautiful picture.. i do like looking around and guessing whats wrong with people in waiting rooms, I guess it'd be a little easier in that situation.

my hospitals Gastro is in the Medical Outpatient department with a section for GI's, but the doctors offices somehow back onto the endoscopy department. and yeh, i hate that weigh in, luckily ours is always in a small discreet office.
