Still doing good coming off cipro/flagly

so far so good, I haven't had bleeding in over three weeks since getting off cipro/flagyl combo. I bled every day for 8 years!  Last week was on Cipro for three days ( to make a total of 10 days on antibiotics) I'm on no orals at the moment either.  I feel really good. My doc said I could (if I wanted and it helped) do a week of antibiotics once a month, alternate between cipro and flaygl.

Right now I"m doing good so I'm not going to push it.

I've been on super critical care renew life and added Beta Glucans at night for my immune system.

I'm on Co Q10, multi, iron and Vit D3 as well.

I would try antibiotics over and over, it's working for me :)

try wrapping your mind around that offer of 1 week a month if you dont find yourself better.

I think abx are a huge part of the answer, obviously. Also, really consider the NA-Cysteine for the CPN portion

Cypro/Flagly combo worked for me also. Cure like remission for 3 months and then started flaring again. Gonna try it again real soon.

so you guys are taking cypro/flagyl to treat UC? how long does it usually take to see if it's working or not?

As best as I can tell, abx are tricky to do more than a temporary remission... But maybe if followed up by fecal transplants it could be permanent? I have some bizarre unremitting liquid D all of a sudden for the 5th day now that is completely strange for my UC flares- it does make me think I may need a bladt if combo abx but i dont want to stab in the dark. Expensive as hell but I would serioisly consider back to back abx followed by FT, given my crazy symptoms right now. Abx historically have given me liquid D but heck suddenly that's all I have.

Yeah, most actually get better, and then get worse again. Nice fix.

Dr. Barody from Australia has written extensively about using ABX therapy for Crohn's and UC, and it is a tricky business because some pathogenic bacteria are extremely resistant to antibiotics, and the ones that survive treatment have more resistance and they can reproduce fast. He says the scary thing about ABX therapy is it can backfire if you don't do it right and create a situation where the bugs come back and are resistant and more virulent.

I did the triple ABX therapy (from the Japanese study) because I was desperate and really didnt have much to lose, except my diseased colon of course. It got rid of insanely intense inflammation in the rectum that has never really come back to the same degree, so in that sense it was worth it.

Glad abx worked for you since you were having such a hard time controlling your flares. Others like Somedude who haven't found relief from anything else might also try it.

Antibiotics ended my flare but I do not not not want to push my luck by using them again unless absolutely necessary. I am grateful for the antibiotics for granting me this remission but I am more than happy if I can maintain it with diet and supplements such as probiotics.

I agree with killcolitis about the dangers of starting/stopping antibiotic therapy. First of all as killcolitis said, antibiotics like all the other meds, can lose their effectiveness. And both Flagyl and Cipro can have side effects, especially Cipro. The last thing I need is to have my tendons blown out (side effect of Cipro) as I enter my golden years. But I recommend a course of antibiotics for initially escaping from an intractable flare when other meds did not work for you.

So what is worse to use on a child for a flare; antibiotics or prednisone? My son responds fast with prednisone but I wonder what it will do to him long term. We might have to try the antibiotics route next time.

I mentioned in my post of last year and early this year that over a period of a year I healed myself of UC through diet and herbal treatment. Just wanted to say that its not for everyone to go down this route and no-one should ever feel bad that it is not for them - as I mentioned earlier my sister has been taking meds for UC for 20 years and I respect her decision to do that. For me it was not an option - I was tied to the loo for most of the day (20 times, not unusual) and when my daughter had her graduation ceremony I had to starve myself so there was nothing to come out while the presentation were going on. We subsequently celebrated with dinner out - for which I suffered later!!! After the steroid treatment which made me hallucinate and a doctor at the hospital telling me I would be back and he would give me intraveneous drugs - I knew I had come to the end of the road and would have to do something drastic. I was fed up with having to plot my way everywhere knowing where the loos would be and take spare clothes with me and not be able to wear light coloured trousers - I am sure lots of you out there understand. All diseases are rotton but UC is such an antisocial problem! I found out the name of a gentleman who had devised a diet to cure it, once and for all. I failed first time round because I thought I could cheat a bit. Second time round I stuck to it because of desperation, as I dont have much will power!! Its very simple, NO SUGAR at all in anything!! No coffee, tea, colas etc. No bread (got yeast in) Limited veg, no root veg, limited fruit (sugar) goats milk, butter, cheese kinder to the gut, meat, chicken, salads but no toms (sugar) supplements which protect the bowel (liquorice)etc. and relaxation. Its not rocket science - its about cutting out anything which might promote candida and only eating things which are gentle on the bowel. I did develop a craving for parsley and carrots - so I must have become a bit anaemic and I lost nearly 2 stone (but I was 1 stone overweight). I have been free of UC for about 3years and have put the weight back on - I eat almost everything,and wear white jeans! but I am aware of not eating too much sugar or too many carbs at one go. So, for me, sugar is poisonous and I have the answer now. I wish all luck for everyone who is at present going through this - you must never be unkind to yourself - its not your fault - you deserve to be healed whatever path you choose. xx
