Urgency with mesalamine enemas

I've been switching between mesalamine enemas and canasa suppositories. Still have a little rectal inflamation that comes and goes. When using the enema's I seem to have quite a bit of urgency, not when I use the canasa. Anyone else find this happens? Just wondering why.

Yes I reacted very bad to them. I had the doctor switch to the Hydrocortizone Enemas..and then switched to the hydrocortisone suppositories later.

Strange that I take the mesalamine (Asacol) all day long. I often wonder if it's doing anything at all. I tend to follow the "if it ain't broke don't fix it."

It is a liquid...could be that once you wake-up, the urge starts because of the added weight and that something is in the rectum/sigmoid.

That would also trigger peristalsis, getting things in motion. Anything there would be coming out.

I have urgency once I have to go and hold it too long once the urge has hit.

Are you using the supps in the day and the enemas at night? or each every second night alternating?

Are you going more times with the enema or just meaning the urgency>?

She holds them all night...that's not the issue. It's the next morning.

Are you using the sulfate free mesalamine enemas? There used to be quite a lot of talk on this board from people who felt they could only use sulfate free generic Rowasa (the 'regular' generic mesalamine enema contains sulfates). I don't think any kind of Canasa contains sulfates, perhaps that is causing the difference.

Taking canasa supp for 3 nights then enema for 1 to 2 nights.

If the Canasa works better with less butt distress, then get your prescription to state to use them up to 3 times daily. At least you can increase or decrease as needed.

There's also the 2g enemas...maybe try those for a short time and see if they help.

There's also the Pentasa enemas...there's less mesalamine, but more liquid actually.

You have a few options at least to see if it's the mesalamine or the carrier liquid that you're sensitive to.

Absorbing...you're not supposed to absorb the liquid, the medication that's in it will help the inflammation.

If you can't use the enemas...you can't use them.

When I use them, i put butt ointment on the nozzle..helps a lot.

You have to find and use what works for you. Something is better than nothing...

Can't get the 2 gram ones here in the States. Tried to get this before. They tell you to use half. Canasa is a lot more Money then the generic enemas. No pentasa here.

@quincy, would alternating with supps and enemas be an option and why? Just curious why this might be done

Peth...there are always options. Depends on what you want it. The alternating could be for tapering the enemas. Alternating could be for limited inflammation and giving you mentally a break. The supps could be used in conjunction with the enemas...daily supps, nightly enemas.

Faith...Interesting. I think the pharmacies only purchase from certain distributors...they're not working hard enough for you i don't think. the other option is to email the company and find out who/what distributors carry their product and ask how you can gain access to them.

You know, many people here have said that the mesalamine enemas are what helped them with the urgency, but they not only never helped me (despite being on oral mesalamine, which *does* help on a long term basis), but also I had explosive diarrhea while using them, and mesalamine stains. Permanently. And it stains grout. Like the grout in bathrooms in the tile right next to the toilet. :-( Also carpet. Like the carpet right outside the bathroom door. The stains are still there and they make me slightly ill to look at. I bought a runner for the carpet and I keep trying to get rid of the stains on the bathroom wall but to no avail...

Going to try half a bottle tonight. For maintence I'd like to use the mesalamine enema at least once a week. Going to try again. Less liquid might help.
