Silly Question ? - need advise from experienced

Hi,

So, I "coming out of my flare" - 3.5 pretty good days.  However I have a massive headache (for 2 days now) - My Dr. is on vacation this week.  2 weeks ago (when I was really flaring) he told me no medicine - no advil, tylenol, cold stuff...etc.  (believes my trigger for this flare was too much Advil).  Should I call the covering Dr. for something this silly, or do you think it would be okay to take 2 Tylenol since I'm feeling better???  The headache is actually making me sick to my stomach.

Yes I'm surprised he say no to tylenol. Tylenol is always what the GI's say you CAN take. Hope it helps. Tylenol does nothing for me unless it has codeine in with it. ;)

Tylenol is fine for me to take. it actually helps really quickly.

I'm wondering why now. When my first flare started I was taking 12-14 Advil a day for a month (to help back pain), after he did my first sigmoidoscopy he said he didn't want any medicines (other than for my UC) in my system, he even waited to give me Vitamin D, 50,000?

Thank you everyone, I'm going to get a couple of Tylenol now :)

Ibuprofen (Advil) should not be used for people with IBD. It can cause gastric bleeding and further damage the the gastric lining.

Enjoy the tylenol, it should help!

I'm allergic to ibuprofen and aspirin, which--according to my old jerk allergist--is because of my chronic hives and angioedema. Before I knew I was allergic to either of them (I wasn't before the hives started!), I tore a muscle and was taking Advil for it, and my lips swelled up.

So beyond the potential for ulcers, ibuprofen might exacerbate inflammation. At least, that's my experience.

But considering that Tylenol is frequently given to patients receiving Remicade infusions ... I seriously doubt there's a reason not to take if it for headaches just because you have UC!

I will again confirm the above. Tylenol seems to be safe for us UC'ers. I also think me taking too many advils was a contributing factor. Feel better!

Seriously, 12 Advil a day? Good that you did not die of bleeding.

Try Tylenol, no issues, trust us. If Advil works, then you have options of LIMITED use of Nabumetone, Celebrex or Mobic, else get Rx of cheapest triptan derivative.

Thank you all so much. I took 2, headache went away...now its back. I'm wondering if this is from tapering pred? I am on 5 mg every other day (just started) this is first day with NO pred in me.

Yes 12 advil. I would take 4 at 8am, 2 pm and 10 am...sometimes waking up with back pain so bad I would pop 2 more in the middle of night.

Now I'm getting hip injections...trying to maintain my UC and AS without Humira or remicade....for now

It could very well be from the pred wean. Tylonel only lasts for about 4 hours. That's why I take Tylonel Arthritis. It has a higher mg and it lasts for 8 hours.

Yeah, when your GI gets back, clarify with him and ask him for a prescription for acetaminophen. The prescription strength is a higher dosage and lasts longer (like the Tylenol Arthritis that Sherry mentions), and the benefit is that if you have prescription medicine insurance, your copay is very likely lower than the cost of OTC tylenol.

I have a little Tylenol #3 (w/codeine) stashed away for emergencies. It's probably past its expiration date, but honestly I'm nervous about taking anything stronger than rx strength tylenol without codeine, because all those opiates cause constipation. You'd think that with UC, constipation would be welcome but I'm sure I'm not alone in dreading it. It just makes a bad situation worse.
