Does your poo have an ammonia smell

OM, I have noticed a pattern with the smell of my poo. I have virtually no smell when I was noticing blood back some time ago but since I have been in remission I notice much more smell to it.

Not sure what that means but that sums me up anyways.

I don't know what ammonia smells like. But I was going to start a topic just recently about the smell. Since february i've had completely formed stool, symptoms are fine after recovering from lowering asacol dose. Now my poo does smell like chemical sometimes. What does this mean??

It's never smelled like this before.

Gross subject but yes, when I was in bad flares.

Our sense of smell though is a funny thing. For instance when some people eat asparagus they notice the smell in their pee. But here is the interesting thing, only certain people have the ability to smell that. So someone may eat asparagus and the same chemical will come out all the time, but only certain people can smell it.

So you may have the ability to smell things others can't.

Sometimes that's a curse! :)

Windex and some other household cleaners smell like ammonia if you don't know what it smells like.

I usually smell blood. I can tell how red the bowl is going to be by the smell. When there is less blood, there is a weird 'sweet' smell. Not sweet in any good way, maybe more like overripe fruit smells sweet.

He put me on sodium butyrate, oral dosing 3mg a day.. might need more, combined with 100-200mg L-Glutamine as well as antimicrobials to kill the overgrowth

Wouldn't the easiest way to explain the smell is old hair dye? I know they don't put ammonia in it anymore, but I used to remember smelling it all the time when I dyed my hair in high school.

No smell whatsoever in my case. The smell is distinct many a times depending on what you eat.

If this yeast growth is observed in your stools, why you were not prescribed antifungals instead? And then shoot up S. biulardii intake. You should be all set then.

Be carefull if you smell a bottle of ammonia,dont stick your nose in it,just

wave your hand over the opening,you will get the smell.

As far as smells go,my poo does not have much of any smell,while the wife with a healthy colon smells you know like it should.  We probably have some sort of bacterial imbalance going on,the inflammation has killed off many good bacteria, ecoli or something else has taken over,iron eating bacteria are out competing other good ones,who knows.

Anyone burping or peeing ammonia has a real problem,not good.

Any bubbles you are seeing that persist in the toilet after peeing are protein and really should not be there.

Canada Mark, I agree with the burnt smell. Once or twice I had that ammonia smell, but burnt best describes me. When I was flaring, mine had absolutely no smell at all which made my hubby wonder if I was really going all those times I spent hours in the bathroom. Do we have any common meds that could cause this?

OM, I noticed that I have a funny smell to my poo (which I assume is ammonia now) when I am in the bad flare and bleeding. It always made me feel more nauseated than normal and I've always had that reaction to ammonia.

PathogenKiller, I was also told by a doctor that if you see bubbles in your pee, it's protein. What else could the bubbles mean?

I think we're all (healthy or not healthy) quite attuned to the smell of what comes out. You immediately know if something's not quite right. But it does show the disease progression and stage that you're in. From normal smelling, to ammonia or burnt (not sure what would cause these), to overwhelmingly horrid (bacteria imbalance, c-diff) to putrid, foul or putrified (when things are really, really bad). When I was at my worst point just before my first trip to the hospital - stools (or more so whatever it was that came came out) was disgusting, bloody, grey, foul smelling, frothy. It was quite a painful and bad time for me. Infection had penetrated all layers of my colon.

So as terrible a topic it is to talk about - I had a conversation a while ago with a younger guy that had just been diagnosed - I asked him straight up how his poo looked and smelled and instead of being disgusted he reacted right away saying how horrid and disgusting it was and how he was a little relieved to know that it wasn't just him.

It good to talk about the things most don't want to and get it out into the open.

Also it might help newer people realize when they are really in trouble - or crossing the threshold of needing to get to the GI or something perhaps.
