Cal Mag or Sodium Butyrate?

Does anyone know which one is better to take - Cal Mag Butyrate or Sodium Butyrate - and why? Thanks!

We use cal-mag from pharmax as advised by our functional md.

My doc says sodium butyrate and I was pretty sure the studies are on sodium...can anyone point me to a study on calcium or magnesium butyrate?

Hey I tried that - Oral 'Butyrate complex' by Pharmax

and their website said "do not take if you have ulcerative colitis"



"Contra-indications

Not suitable for individuals with colitis, gastritis or ulcerative conditions of the stomach or colon.

Pathogen Killer - that's what I noticed too...hmm.

Aguywithuc - that disclaimer is so confusing! What do you make of that? Everything else written there, especially the fact that it goes directly to the colon, would indicate otherwise, right? Perhaps that disclaimer is just some sort of FDA compliance so the product does not make specific disease state "claims"?

Our Functional MD specializes in treating IBD specifically so I'll go with her advice. I haven't read up on it really and aguywithuc she specifically uses this brand and on the bottle the only contra indication is pregancy or planned pregnancy. It hasn't hurt and it's been months - may be helping. It does stink though!

but its a different type of butyrate.. how do we know what it does? Since the studies are on sodium and my doctor specifically said sodium butyrate (and this dude is a friggin genius).. Ive searched calcium butyrate ulcerative collitis ,magnesium butyrate ulcerative collitis and hit nothing. I found one study that I remember but cant find that used a combo of butyrates... but sodium butyrate brings a jackpot of info.

I think the sodium makes a big difference here..

Dunno. I'm not second guessing her as I trust her, she's done this for years, harvard/stanford, specializes in IBD blah blah and this is beyond me TBH. My daughter's done well on it (knock on wood).
I don't see the contra-indication for UC on their site? Is this what you were looking at aguywithuc?

Pathogenkiller - just found all your info and experience on the other thread on RS. Seems to have made a huge difference for you. I think it's worth thinking about switching....

Killcolitis - can you tell whether it's made a difference? I know you are doing a lot with diet too.

I think it's helped but i can't be too sure b/c of the fact that we're doing so many other things. Hasn't hurt, and she's very sensitive to supplements.

This has been a wonder for me, sodium butyrate thanks pathogenkiller for recommending it.

My sleep has gotten much much better, I wake up feeling refreshed and thats a wonderful thing. My poop has gotten better but I can tell this is going to be a slow process. I have also added slippery elm and a vitamin K complex to the mix. I did the vitamin K for about 3-4 days before the sodium butyrate to see if I noticed any change and I didnt.

Hmm. Which brand of sodium butyrate is everyone using? Most of the brands I've looked at (quick search) are cal/mag.

Danthaman.. So glad to hear! It's been a miracle worker for me too. I can hardly believe the progress in such a short time. Crossing my fingers for both of us ;)

Did anyone give a try to this thing when in flare? Did that put you in remission?

I have been a lurker for this because I wonder if it reaches to the colon to do the job or get metabolized way before that..

I havent been in remission since 2003ish. My symptoms before starting SB were bad, no pain just high frequency with poor quality stools. Since I started I noticed my sleep was better, probably since I didnt have to get up 3-4 times a night, now its 1-2 and that is probably only because our newborn wakes me and I go then. I will say that I added a vitamin K supplement and slippery elm both of which I have tried before so it could be a combo thing. Addtionally I had to take Cipro for the past 4 days for an infection and during that time by stools got even better but since I have been off I have noticed they are starting to turn more yellowish and are starting to float :(

The directions say to take with food so I take two caps, three times a day. Also be warned they smell like stinky cheese!

I got mine in today, so I will be trying them. I'm on Cipro right now for 5 days alternating with flagyl (which I won't do again) but will do this month of antibiotics (the 5 days) and stop. My GI and I were trying something new.

My integrative doctor today emailed and asked me to include Biotic research Butyric-Cal-Mag. Has anyone tried this and is it good for ulcerative colitis? What to be sure before I include on a daily basis.
