Man, I hope the North Korean dude doesn't go crazy *OT*

Huh! These dictators always seem to be popping up in various countries. But yeh, this guy sounds like the worst of all so far.

I look at communist countries as akin to a gang... The leader in this case happens to be quite new and young. What actually worries me is that the new leader get's into a situation where he has no choice - either he tries to impress his members or "army and citizens" in this case by trying to show or demonstrate his supposed strength and courage to them or he risks loosing the respect and admiration of his followers and ultimately his power and influence over them... A point of no return on his end so to speak.

To me the concern is no so much if any country overreacts - but that we even react at all.

It's a no win situation no matter how we look at it and has built up to a point where it must be dealt with and to me that is the most worrisome part.

The principles behind the UN have opportunity to really shine through here... but for that to happen everyone from all Countries must truly come together for the first time - and that is the most difficult aspect as not much time has passed since the last few conflicts. Perhaps the time has come for us all to set aside our differences from the past and completely unite against a common threat. There's to much war as is...

There is zero chance that the Hermit Kingdom has figured out how to weaponize nukes onto ballistic missiles... Or even get their longer range ballistic missiles remotely on target... Yet. But eventually, via enough trial and error, and spending their money on that while their people starve, they will.

There was an interesting article in foreign affairs that made an excellent point: that if, Heaven forbid, a general (non-nuclear) war did erupt on the Korean peninsula, the North 's dicrepid soviet-era forces would ultimately be annihilated- they have mass and fanatacism but they are not remotely equipped for 21st century style warfare, and much of their munitions are probably now way last theirnshelf life and would be inert in battle. But since that would entail swift regime collapse, that is where the obese manchild might try to take the world- well world economy, anyway- and maybe a million koreans and some others in the region, with him by lobbing a nuke or two as he goes down, or pre-authorizing its use anyway to some underling, since his command and control systems would be quickly destroyed.

The new Korean president, Ms Park, obviously cannot sit back and do nothing at all if that idiot in Pyongyang tries to prove his mettle again with a new violent stunt again the south. He already killed scores of sailors and also some villagers in that island by the border, and the South swallowed its pride. Next time he does that, I am certain the south will retaliate with considerable force.

Though China has many strong reasons to want to keep the Northern regime from collapsing, they are increasingly, even extremely, irritated by the tail wag dog obnoxiousness of their North Korea nominal "ally" threatening a regional or world conflagration. South Korea is a zillion times more economically important in trade terms with China than the North. So hopefully China will make it clear to Pyongyang, behind the scenes, that they will not back up the North in the UN security council with a veto if the obese manchild does choose to pull off a stunt again.

It's scary though- the kid really seems to have much less of a clue than his bouffant hair wearing Dad, who at least played a more predictable game of demanding another round of talks in which he would demand economic aid. They both try to look crazier than they really are, to gain leverage, but the kid may well be a bit clueless.

Perhaps...perhaps...but I think in this day and age, we should avoid mass destruction weapons such as nuclear weapons. Except this dude from North Korea is crazy enough to do such a thing.

When we invaded Iraq, we didn't start throwing nuclear bombs. If the NK dude wants to fight, he just has to bring his crew over to the U.S.

He has 1.5 mil or so of an army...bring it over....

I often wonder if Americans are aware of how they are viewed across the world.

The reason SK isn't concerned about NK is simply because they've been threatening them for as long as they can remember....you know, "the boy who cried wolf" syndrome.

Pb4- ROK isn't concerned about the DPRK's latest antics? Well, life goes on there of course but the concern is way way up there- their financial markets have taken quite a hit for example. It's because as wodin said, new kid, and also because that kid has shown a level of recklessness that Dr Evil sr. didn't. The fact that China is getting very antsy over the erratic actions of their looney brat "ally" is also proof of how the situation has changed. I think the best motivation for China to step up is that if the brat managed to start a war, the regime will be destroyed (though he will inflict a lot of damage in the process) in the process , and a united, democratic Korea would emerge albeit at a real cost in blood, especially for civilians and industry in Seoul. It's the idea of a democracy on their border (Hong Kong is theirs now and doesn't quite count) not a capitalist country that bothers them- China after all is a hyper-capitalist country now. But China doesn't know yet how to put a leash on him without causing the regime collapse they fear.

Although I don't think either of the Bush were great presidents, the junior was certainly taken for a ride. I honestly don't think he was that bad, much better than today's republican clan (I consider myself independent). So nobody can compare them to a dictator like that kid.

That being said, my only concern is, that fella should not hit S Korea. (I don't think, they have perfected those missiles to go any longer, never heard any successful test.) If anything happens to S. Korea and that economy cripples, whole world will be pulled in depression. Somebody has to give them money to rebuild and nobody has it (except China). I keep wondering, what does China get by recognizing this regime (and supporting them)!!
