Still in Remission from Spinach/Sunflower Seeds 3 Years Later

Even when I was in remission carrots gave me bad d. When I first did SCD I forgot all about that and had lots of carrots. No wonder I didn't become symptom free. I stay away from carrots now.

No worries about the med pressure. I understand where you're coming from and obviously needed it to get back to being healthy again. I probably won't stay on it, if all goes well with tapering. I like the fact then if I need it, the drug is still potent from not having taking it consistently for maintenance. Hopefully the diet alone will be all I need, as it has been in the past. Lesson learned not to take it for granted!

The spinach makes my stool lose and um yes green. It even smells like spinach. Am I not digesting it right?

Other than that my stool look very healthy. Is it ok to taper to every 2nd day now?

Andrina - Do not begin tapering any medication until you are entirely symptom-free for a long period of time (give it at least a month or so).

Regarding the loose stools, are you eating the spinach with bread, pasta, or rice? I know you've been doing SCD, so probably not. This part really is key to firming up stools when you're eating something as fibrous as spinach. If you're otherwise symptom-free (no blood, no mucus, etc.), I think you're on the right track; but I do think you'll continue to have loose stools until you start eating the spinach with a soluble fiber (white bread, pasta, rice). It's been a long time since I did SCD - are they any soluble fibers in that diet? Maybe you could Google soluble fibers and try to find some that would work with the SCD.

I'm curious - if you're having luck with the spinach-sunflower diet, and the SCD is holding you back from getting totally symptom-free, why not just drop SCD? I'm not trying to pressure you, just wondering what you think the benefit of SCD is if it hasn't gotten you into remission.

Got it, I see. As with meds, I wouldn't taper the spinach until you're symptom-free. And even then, take it slow - eat it maybe every other day for a month or so.

Regarding the sweet potatoes, they are a soluble fiber; however, they are not at the top of the list for ideal soluble fibers. In my signature, I have a link to a website called HelpForIBS.com. The have lists of both soluble and insoluble fibers, and they list the more grain-like fibers as their top recommendation.

Although this website is geared toward IBS, I found the advice to be very useful in combination with the spinach/sunflower diet.

You'll notice that greens (spinach) and sunflower seeds are insoluble fibers, and they advise you to eat it in combination with soluble fibers.

One gastro told me that a lot of people with IBD also have some IBS (they go hand-in-hand). If you can get away with using potatoes to firm things up, that's great since they're not processed. If they don't work, you might want to consider adding some grains from the insoluble fiber list.

Whichever way you go, always be sure to chew the spinach thoroughly to help break down the fiber.

Going to give spinach another shot,but will say even for me canned spinach is gross,but will suck it
down like a good boy. I love the sunbutter but tooo much arginine for me,makes me over active.

Between spinach and beans,my colon will love it or hate it, and since it has not been fed any extra sugar for two weeks,it might get real mad,who knows.
