That is quite contradictory. You are in horrible enough shape that you need surgery but I'm not going to give you a note to be off work. In his defense though, have you been going to work in your present condition? If so, maybe he thinks if you have already been doing it then what is different about tomorrow?

I think I would look for a new dr. You should have a second opinion on surgery anyway. There's no reason he couldn't give you a note for work.

Your doctor just wants to stay out of making sick day decisions between you and your employer. He's probably had many people try to take advantage of that. Here's what you do...

If you don't want to switch doctors just have him write a report of your health findings. (e.g. ulcerative colitis, fever, bleeding, chronic condition, etc.), or get a copy from their office. If you present that to your employer and request time off they can't really do anything. In fact you could even go on short term disability or even long term and they still couldn't do anything. Your doctor knows this and just doesn't want to be making that call.

Sounds like a new doctor is in order. Check into FMLA with your employer, IMHO. I hope you get better soon!
