Coconut Water

Who drinks this and does it help with Colitis? I have read that coconut water is a wonderful anti-inflammatory and digestive aid. Thanks for your input!

I drink it too but I don't notice any changes in my UC whether I drink it or not.

Gonk: As far as the oil goes, how do you take it?

I drink this too - typically when I'm in a flare. Soooo tasty and supposed to help replace the minerals and such I lose with all the bathroom trips. Doesn't do a thing for my colitis though. Shame.

You can take the coconut oil a number of ways depending on your preference.
1) you can take it straight, just drink/eat (it turns to liquid somewhere in the low 70's) a tablespoon of it
2) you can put it in warm water and drink it that way
3) you can use it like butter and eat it that way
4) sometimes I just put it in my tea or coffee, it floats on top but it's easy to take that way

If you take it straight it may upset your stomach the first time or two but your body should adapt to it fairly quickly. My naturopath recommends taking it in warm water before meals.

I would drink it if I get directly from coconut and not in the cans, which is usually processed to some degree.

I am planning to add coconut oil. I wonder if you have any favorite researched brand. I would love to have virgin coconut oil that I could use as spread instead of butter (or processed spreads from the supermarket)

I LOVE coconut water! I've tried every brand around my area, so far my favorite is sold only at World Market "Coco Water". I can't stand the Naked brand or other brands i've tried.

There are alot of brands with artificial junk sweeteners, and so every brand tastes different. One person that has never had coconut water may try a brand and dislike it but if tried all other brands they might enjoy it.

I've just started drinking coconut water but have been using coconut oil for a couple of years (both internally and externally).

We get ours at the regular supermarket, our market (HEB in Texas) has a big organics/naturals selection and has virgin expeller pressed coconut oil. It's about $7 for a mason jar size. If you whip it with your mixer, it makes a great texture to spread on toast. I've also put it in my hot coffee, used it in cooking/baking, and you can drink it raw when it's melted.

It's also a soothing moisturizer for the dry itcy patches I've gotten since having UC and also for sore bums and rashes that come along with UC sometimes.

I love to mix coconut water 50/50 with either orange juice or welches grape juice as an alternative to Gatorate. I think it quenches my thirst faster and for a longer period of time. Not sure if it helped with the symptoms but staying hydrated sure can't do any harm.

This is what I used a lot when on Pred as well to deal with the whole crazy thirst side effect.

what about banana juice? i hear that's the shiznit.

Just to update my search with coconut water. It turns out that FDA wants all coconut water sold in the US to be pasteurized. This essentially kills all enzymes in that water and all you get is 'mineral water'. Hence, I will not buy any canned/boxed coconut water anymore. I found some coconuts in local Korean store but I do not have tools to break it open (It needs specific kind of knives and experty, so that you don't slice your fingers).

I got virgin coconut oil from Trader Joe's and its pretty good. I have started using it in cooking as a replacement for industrial oils. The taste changes but I can handle the change.
