Completely OT getting chickens

Well I'm so excited lol I'm getting chickens have 4 on order
There house and run turned up today,now just have to build it
Have got some big bins for their food and other stuff and am going to try and fox proof a section of garden for them.
Looking forward to lovely fresh eggs when they start to lay.

I love having chickens! The fresh eggs are so good. We have had problems with foxes in the past....the poor chickens make a tasty snack for them! But my hubby finally got it figured out how to keep them out. We have a lot of hawks around here too so we have to keep an eye out when we let them out in the yard. Enjoy!

My dad grew up on a farm. I visited sometimes but not the same. Not many chickens. Have had fresh milk before!

I had to get eggs over the summer when I was a kid. I don't really care for chickens. They're bullies!

But I do wish I could have some in my garden. How exciting for you!

That's wild! I didn't realize you live in the country, Lambkins. So you'll be able to make very fresh toad-in-the-hole ... BTW, did you read Peety's recent post about seeing the Queen in London a couple weeks ago? / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Chickens are fun! We have one who is an escape artist... As soon as the coop is opened, she takes off out of the run. The others just stay there.

when I was really young back in my country, I used to go to the my great grand parents house in the country, they had a small farm with all sorts of animals. I used to chase the chickens around lol.

My best friend has chickens as well as a good friends of ours. We get fresh eggs all the time. Store bought eggs don't compare to these. BUT just keep in mind that chickens can fly. Not very far but enough to get them over the coop unless its a high fence or completely enclosed. Also, if you have hawks in your area, you need to keep an eye out for them as well.

We had chickens when I was a little girl. One of them only had one leg and I called it hop a long and made it wear hats and go on the slide and take wagon rides :)
Other than that I just remember how messy and smelly they are! My sister and her husband had chickens a while back and were getting a lot of eggs and loved it, but they couldn't keep other animals from attacking them.

No I don't live in the country but have quite a big garden and good neighbors, hubby thinks I've gone slightly mad but kids are all as excited as me.
Don't think we have hawks but do have a lot of foxes,so will have to be very careful and remember to shut them up at night.
Have got them a special run which is inclosed so they should be safe and will let them have the run of the garden when we are all home.
The kids have chosen names for them I just say when my girls get here.
Hope the dog doesn't scare them though

I would rather go to a pond and watch ducks or swans. At this time of yr the fuzzy little ducklings start learning to swim, and it's nice to see their parents looking after them! / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
