Navy,
Asacol had a similar affect on me and so did mesalamine enemas. I switched to pentasa and ended with headaches, now I take Apriso and I really like it. However, I have a theory as to why the enemas gave me trouble and I think it was due to the fact that I was already inflamed when I started taking them. I think just the insertion of the enema and the fact that I had to hold it when I already had sever gas and urgency did nothing but make it worse. Now that I'm tapering off the pred and seem to be more in control at the moment I would like to give it another try. I'm going to call my doctor tomorrow and get it going. I think the enemas might be a great means of maintenance and might not be good treatment, at least for me. Either way I'd like to give it another try before I try 6mp again (as I briefly started it but had SEVERE reflux and couldn't handle it). Especially after reading more about the rectum and the how affective rectal meds can be.
So, in short don't fully discount the the mesalamines as there are different brands and they do affect people differently.
