Vaccine for Colitis and Crohn's disease

this is so exciting!! i'll be keeping my eye on this one.

First thanks for posting this. Did anyone get from the site what is actually being injected? I am not sure. One video says something about "killed bacteria" so I guess that is what it is. What kind of bacteria I wonder. Could it be injectable poop? :)

It says that from the 2 UC patients treated under compassionate care, one went into remission and one has mild symptoms.

Just a week ago I read something about MS novel treatment and is also a site specific immunomodulator and wondered how that could be applied to UC,  this seems to be the closest thing to it.

So they expect you to go off the med eventually. You're not supposed to be an addict and take the med forever.

Dude man, if it buys you 5-10 years remission and you only have to do it for about 6 weeks treatment, isn't it good enough? In 5-10 years time, there will be other Qubiologics around with even more powerful stuff.

You can call it vaccine, or treatment or ice cream or whatever, as long as it gives me totally no symptoms and colonoscopies show clean sheet, W.T.F. do I care. Better something that works than Bags.

 

I may be naturally skeptical, or maybe even naturally pessimistic, but I see lots of glowing anecdotal videos and testimonials, but very little of any substance here. I believe I’ll be waiting for a bit more evidence before getting my hopes up too much.

I wrote this very f.... thing thing in my hormones thread. Bone marrow transplant to reset the system. People were like ...meh...

Now, what do we see? A drug to reset the immune system.

I have met someone whose Crohn's went into remission after stem cell treatment for cancer - but this describes the SSI as a "killed bacteria" - that wouldn't be the same as a stem cell would it?

Edited to add: from reading on the other Crohn's forum the bacteria is an e. coli strain...

Pretty exciting news. Will be watching this space eagerly. Also hoping that with diet mods it is more effective even.

Vaccine gives me the idea that you take it before the illness breaks out.

I would also not speak of cure. Remission is the word for me. I know it can always break out again. I'm happy for everyone who gets a long-term remission. But since we don't know the causes we also won't know the triggers for sure. And those triggers are different for everyone. That might explain that even in this study not every patient was responding to it.

I wonder about side effects and costs.

I read about this treatment on the Crohn's board. Same poster posted about it and all.

@quincy - Do you know how high the failure rate for treatment is? Just 'cos it works for you doesn't mean it works for everybody. I have failed every med going and ended up with a bag as a result. No, it's not the end of the world but I would still rather not have a bag if I could.

A cure with 100% success rate is precisely what we need to be looking for, imo. Not meds with an average 50% success rate at maintaining remission (rates do vary according to type of med, whether it's for UC/Crohn's, etc.) Not to mention that researchers' idea of 'remission' is rather generous and very few studies look beyond a year of treatment, so that we don't really know how many people are still in remission after 10 years, say.

This SSI does look interesting. Only time will tell whether it's on the right path, 'cos at the moment 3 out of 10 failure rate is too high for my liking. But if they could improve on it... I dunno. I don't know what the right path to take for research is, but this has to be better than another anti-TNF or Vedolizumab.
