Azathioprine weaning off

Hello folks,

GI wants me to wean off Azathioprine. She suggested to taper off by 50mg every 4 weeks. She wants some of it in my system if it goes bad and then she can ramp it up rather fast.

I wonder those who weaned off, what schedule did you follow?

Sorry I thought Azathioprine was a maintainance med you only stop taking it if its not working for you or you can't metabolise it.
If you do stop you don't have to taper,theraputic dosage is worked out in relation to weight.
I've personally never heard this approach from the medical profession and find myself doubting your GI's understanding and competence.

yea, you can stop Azathioprine anytime, it just takes awhile to build back up in your system to reach the therapeutic level. No weaning involved at all as far as I know...

i weaned off of 6mp even though my doctor said to just stop it. I was at 50 mg for 6 months and dropped to 25 mg for 1.5 months. I don't think it made a difference though. I didn't have side effects from it.
