OT- Rant about my friend who won't stop copying my homework

There's this girl in my social studies and English class who copies my homework everyday. Sadly, I'm too nice and too awkward to say no to her, so I end up just letting her copy. It makes me mad because I work really hard to get everything done and get good grades while at the same time fighting off UC and depression, and she just lays around and leeches off other people and then cries when she fails. She really did cry once. We were writing an essay in English and she plagarised me without me knowing and then she was scared that we were both going to get zeros, luckily the teacher didn't notice.

And this isn't like she copies my homework sometimes or we share answers, she copies off me every single time and if I don't have it done she gets upset. Since school is over except for finals and she's still trying to leech, I told her off today through a text message and she responded saying that she barely copies, which isn't true, but it feels good to finally get it off my chest.

Anyways, it's going to come back and bite her in the butt next year because she's taking an extra year of high school and she plans to be an elementary school teacher but I don't think that's going to happen since she failed math and science and the only reason she passed social was because of me.

LOL, you haven't done it?! Why, that's unnacceptable!

So she's a friend or a classroom mate? If she's your friend outside school, like real friend then there's an issue. You can't blow her off, is she nice to you?

Im glad you set her straight. My friends and i used to do that in school but it was mainly to compare answers to see if one of us messed up. You dont want a free loader friend like that anyway. She keeps doing it because she knows she can get away with it, but wait til she gets to college (that is if she ever finishes high shool). You can get kicked out of school- no refunds- for pulling crap like that.

Yeah, she's my friend outside of school. She's the only close friend I have so that's why I'm afraid to blow her off. But I won't see her much next year since I'm going to university and she'll still be in high school, so I'm hoping I can make different friends. I find I get along better with boys anyways.

Let her do it every time. Tests are what count. Then she's screwed. That's how I did it.

At my 25th reunion for high school, a woman I didn't recognize came over to me and asked if we could talk. She reminded me of who she was - a girl I hardly knew from middle school, who never had classes with me after 8th grade because we were separated at that point by our academic interests.

In 7th grade I apparently let her copy all my test answer sheets in science class.

I really had no memory of this, but she remembered quite clearly that I would let her see my sheet. She was so, so grateful. She passed science because of me, she said. That was the year her mom became a falling-down drunk and her dad beat her every day. Seriously.

Now she had a good marriage and kids and was happy. She told me over and over again how grateful she was - I got uncomfortable and really wondered how crazy the world is.

I'm sorry your friend is bugging you about your homework, etc. You are right to be annoyed. In the end, aside for the part where she demands your work and cries when you don't give it to her, she is hurting no one but herself. I would say to try and understand what might be going on in her life that she needs this help from you, and how much you can give without making your own life too hard. And also, talk to your parents about it.

Melissa just noticed you're in AB, Canada too :p.

But anyway I would say just tell her to do her own work. Stand up for yourself. University will be a new experience and you'll make friends there. Simple :).

She obviously REALLY enjoys the learning process herself.

It's tough because she's your friend but you have to be strong on this, its' doing neither of you any good. You resent her and she's not learning herself.

Yeah, I don't think she'd be a good elementary school teacher considering she doesn't know basic math and can't memorize the difference between liberalism and conservatism, which is the whole point of this year's social course. She just wants to work with kids, I think she should work at a daycare or something instead.

As a babysitter maybe is the best option.

Actually I usually don't like social studies too much but it was a lot of fun this year. I enjoyed learning political ideologies and economics as opposed to just history, it felt like it was actually useful.

Bad friend you've got there IMO...She'll fit right in with the teachers we have here in Alberta by the way...I find our education system here horrific (with the exception of some of the private schools we have in AB), but Calgary public board teachers suck!

Yeah, unfortunately I'm learning the hard way that she'll make a fine old teacher (no offense to the teachers out there who can actually spell, do basic math and don't have serious psychological issues, I haven't met many yet who tick all of those boxes).
I agree with Kazbern, you never know what's going on with her but that doesn't excuse what she's doing and at 18 she should be a little better at getting her stuff together. If she makes it to university she will get caught. My husband teaches in a uni and it's hilarious hearing about the excuses students pull for plagiarism. It doesn't fly there.

Seems the norm for many to copy and cheat in any educational setting. People make money doing others' homework/papers/etc. scary.

She'll never make it as a teacher regarding the education process. her choice.

about her family life, her parents divorced last summer because her mom caught her dad going on a dating website. She lives in an apartment now with her mom and brother, she and her mom share a bedroom. I don't think she stays with her dad at all but he gives her large amounts of money all the time and picks her up from school when she feels like skipping.

I agree that our education system is horrific. I think the first year of high school is way too easy and gives you the false assumption that you can do well by not doing much and then in grade 11 and 12 the curriculum hits you hard.
