Has anyone had a doctor prescribe codeine for their UC? My UC has healed from pancolitis to just rectum but the bowel frequency won't go down and I can't go to work or anything.

Someone recently was touting codeine for use as controlling his/her symptoms. It's not a recognised medication for that reason, but the action of the medication itself does cause constipation...so in effect, it could help.

I'm allergic to codeine, so I'd never use it for anything...the pain in my stomach from it would far outweigh any other pain I was having.

It's a systemic medication and an addictive one....so you'd possibly end up having another issue of dependency.

What about rectal medications...have you tried them? What has your doctor said about using Imodium?

How often are you going daily? and what's the consistency of the stool...and are you having mucus and bleeding as well?

You're in a tough situation...but hopefully you have more options yet.

I go about 8 times a day - with 6 or 7 of them being in the morning. My last flex sig showed moderate inflammation in the rectum and recto-sigmoid. I tried immodium it doesn't really work. I've tried cortifoam which also didn't do much, it might have reduced bathroom trips by one or two but not much. I just don't know what else I can do - it would be sad to have to do such a huge surgery for this last portion of inflammation when everything else is healing.

How long were you on the cortifoam?

How about mesalamine enemas?

ARe you on any oral 5ASA?

How about fibre supplements and probiotics?

I did the cortifoam for about 2 months. I tried mesalamine enemas for a couple weeks. I am taking lialda and VSL3. But nothing works. =( The one thing I haven't tried yet is steroid enemas which I may do soon but other than that slight hope NOTHING works.

Were you worse on the mesalamine enemas or with some improvement.

The steroid enemas are a good suggestion.

When do you get your next scope now that you're on the vedolizumab?

There was no real improvement with the mesalamine enemas. I did a scope this past February and it showed the rectal and rectosigmoid inflammation and that the rest of the pancolitis had healed.

Like I said...a couple of weeks. Maybe try them again in combo with the steroid ones.

The codeine won't heal anything...you still have to focus on the healing/lowering inflammation.

or surgery if your quality of life is diminished.

I was under the impression that hardening the stools with an inflamed colon can just increase the chances of ripping your insides apart. My doctor told me this during my first flare up but I am unsure of its reliability.
