Children hospitalized with IBD increases dramatically

that really sucks !

 

Nope my daughter never ate SAD, all organic, all home made including baby food. It's way more complicated than that. Love it when people assume you've caused your/your child's disease. SteathGuardian, haven't you posted about how your parents blame you for your disease? Your comment makes no sense. The increase is becauase IBD in North America is becoming a serious epidemic and they don't have a clue as to why.

blaming anyone is pure bullicrap, there could be some environmental reasons for this increase, but with my experience being blamed by my parents for my UC because they can't accept their genetics is very damaging and just evil.
From this forum we know that many here have different diets and lifestyles, it''s not as simple as, "well you eat crappy food so you get UC -boom" get over yourself and get real!

If it's a genetic disease, is it possible that it just spreads more and more as people who have the gene continue to reproduce. Like, if a mother has the gene and has two children, she passes it on to both her kids, who have two children each, and they pass it on to their kids, who have multiple children each, etc. and the gene just keeps spreading, meaning an increase in patients as we go through the generations.

Though to be honest I never really ate well. But I have a high metabolism so I'm very skinny and all the bad food didn't seem to have a negative effect on me and I just kept eating. I think the real trouble started last year when I started drinking coffee every morning. That was probably my colon's breaking point.

Didn't realize McDonalds, Coca-Cola, and Frito Lay just opened up a couple of years ago. I thought they had been around much longer.

Well that's different from SAD, isn't it? Yeah, fermented food etc have been lost likely to our detriment. And the environment is full of toxins, through in the hygiene hypothesis and a ton of unknown factors including increased immigration (my daughter has immigrant genes and we're part of a group which develops very high rates of IBD when we move to the west etc). I don't blame myself for my daughter's disease and since no one know why this disease is triggered (for most it's way more than just food though that no doubt is a factor) . As for pastured dairy, even in my "traditional" culture pastured dairy and wheat are staples. I don't think it's the food we ate in our case. I know babies born with this crap who could not tolerate breast milk even so it's likely not their diet (of course, any naturopath will tell you it was the mother's fault for eating wheat etc).

I think blame is a strong word. No one purposely wants to inflict disease on themselves or anyone. There's limited and contradictory information out there on all the foods we eat. My parents gave me milk every day because they believed in the calcium craze and genuinely felt that it was a health food. It ended up doing more harm than good because I developed sensitivity to it with terrible bloating and diarrhea. My brother also developed rashes and eczema which went away after eliminating milk. When the research showed the link between milk fats and UC, it only confirmed my suspicions. I'm an Americanized Indian as well and I strongly believe that non-adherence to the traditional diet that my genes were built on led to my disease.

I also used to believe that my disease was a freak accident and only developed because of genetic risk - but the risk is so low that other factors HAVE to influence it - things like antibiotic use, diet, lack of exercise, stress. I do agree that disease can't be traced to a single cause, but what goes into our gut influences many things.

I'm still recovering from cipro damage, and the damage it caused made me cynical of doctors and medicine in general. That such a dangerous medicine is prescribed like candy is shocking to me, especially considering what it does to the body and gut flora.

If they ever track down why one identical twin gets UC and the other does not,then we might get somewhere.
Epigenetics,folks,caused by some environmental factor.

Of course they have been looking at this for years and years,and still no answer.

Yup, my GI said Alberta has the highest rate in the world.

BeatUC: Did not know that.
If I might ask,how old were they when the one got UC.
Can you think of different life experiences they might have between them,prior to the one getting UC.
For instance the one with UC drinks milk the other does not,or one went camping and swam in a stream,or one did or did not get sick when everyone else did. Stuff like that.
Might be interesting to see if you can come up with a list of differences,that might point in some direction.
Even something seemingly insignificant like the one with UC likes to stay up at night and read in bed.
That is why I first asked how old they are,trying to gauge what their life experience might be.

The list could go on and on, perhaps something one did or did not do that changed gut bacteria somehow,or immunity

one got their shots two weeks after the other, or uses different toothpaste,you could go crazy trying to track this down.

Beat: Since they are that old difficult to try and pinpoint what might have happened,how old was the one with UC when they got it.
There just has to be some specific set factors, where one identical twin gets uc and one does not.
What we don't know perhaps in identical twins is the gut bacteria identical,or how it might change over time from one twin to the other. Believe research needs to be done if not done yet on this.

IMO, it's all caused by the ******ized hybridized gluten in the grains.

Gluten in grains has exponentially increased in the last 2 decades to incredible levels never heretofore seen before.
