How is everyone doing on Delzicol?

I have been taking Delzicol for about 30 days.  Much greater gass and stomach cramps.  It's kinda like my colon can't figure out if it wants to flare up , or not.  Very unsettling!  Also, the dosing is a real pain.  I am on a food plan where I need to eat evrey 2 1/2 -3 hours.  Really messes me up.

I MISS MY ASACOL.

I took it for 1 week, & had to stop- the gas & cramps were unbelievable, & the nauseau was just as bad. We switched to Asacol HD, & things settled down pretty quick. Delzicol really messed me up, the capsules are so huge & sticky. I think it was getting stuck in the upper part of my GI tract, & dissolving where it shouldn't have. Leading to the stomach upset. It was awful.

grandmom3379  did you consider Asacol HD?  I switched from asacol to asacol HD with no issues like gas ect.

Same as asacol so far. Taking without food is a little of a pain because take it 4 times a day.

I've been taking delzicol since early May. After about 3 weeks I noticed a lot of gas and I started to get flareups again. I read on here somewhere that if you take the pill out of the capsule it helps distribute the medicine better. I just started doing that yesterday and am hoping it works. If not I'll ask my doctor to switch to Asacol HD. I had only been on the Asacol for 2 months before I was forced to switch and had just gotten my UC under control so am not sure if my problems are from the Delzicol or if I would have had them anyway.

Also - I asked 2 different pharmacists and they both said you can take Delzicol with or without food even though the packaging specifies to take it on an empty stomach. Any opinions on that?

Does anyone know if there's any danger to taking the pill out of the capsule?

Somebody posted somewhere (maybe another thread) that the directions on the bottle were only put there because there were no tests on how the med reacted with food so therefore they had to state that on the bottle.

Did well for 9 years with Asacol taking 800mg 2x daily. I didn't wish to go to Asacol 800 because sometimes if I feel a flare up coming on, it was easy to increase the Asacol 400 by one tablet...resulting in a 1000mg dose 2x daily for a few weeks.  This would always calm things down and I'd go back to two tablets, 800mg dose, for long periods of time.

During a major bout, my Dr would prescribe 1600mg three - four times a day.  I found I did not do well on this high a dosage.  The side effects were aweful.

AsacolHD doesnt give me that flexability. However, I am not doing well on the Delzicol.  May be my best bet to try the AsacolHD.

Hi - I took Asacol since it first came out, about 20 years ago (or that's when my GI heard about it, lol) and after about 3-4 weeks on Delzicol, I was developing some symptoms, too.

I totally agree about liking the flexibility of the dosage. I was on 16 pills a day (4, 4 x day) for years. Decreased down to 12 a day at times.

I am starting on Lialda - saw my doc today.

Doing great here. Been on Delzicol for several months now after 6 years on Asacol. Can't tell a difference at all. I don't follow the instructions regarding taking with or without food. I called the company and asked and they only had to label it that way because they didn't test the medicine with food. It's perfectly find to take with food. You can also safely remove the capsules.
