Could pale poo be from Azathioprine?

Hey guys, I have had pale poop the last week. My Aza has been increased from 100mg to 125 and I am taking Asacol HD. Wondering if that could be the case..I am not in a flare at the moment and poo is formed but pale. My doc is out till the 16th! ARG! My liver enymes are good and I had an ultrasound of my liver in Feb. I need to quit googling because everything looks really scary. Any ideas at all? Thanks

I am also on 125mg of aza and asacol HD - its has never had an effect on the colour of my stool.

Very pale or white colored stool can be a sign of poor liver function. How recently were your liver enzymes tested?

There should be a doc on call available to you even while your GI is on vacation. If not, a GP or even an urgent care doctor can examine you and order the appropriate tests or give you a referral to a doctor who is currently practicing.

I had paleness with Colazal. I seem to go through phases when things are different colors. I notice lighter is usually airier and not as dense looking which always makes me a little nervous about inflammation.

Well, the aza was just bumped up to 125 2 mos ago. My liver enzymes were sightly elevated a month ago and my GI had me take another blood test last week and my enzymes were normal. I have been taking Aza for 7 years and have never had elevated liver enzymes until that last time.

I did see my GP today and he did not seem overly concerned since my liver enzyme test was ok and he thought it was ok to wait and talk to my GI on the 16th. I think I am going to decrease my aza a bit until speaking with my doc. It just seems the aza could be taxing my liver even more. I am just a bit nervous as it seems like if its not one thing its always another:(

Pale such as white? yellow, light brown?

Quincy is was super light tan color almost white in some places on the worst day. Today it was a very light tan color. It is formed. I have read tons of scary stuff.

Are you on any PPI's such as Prilosec?

I've had light colored stool off and on for a few years. My GI just told me to keep an eye on it because all my blood tests were normal. I'm now starting to have gall bladder issues, which included the pale stool and occasionally I will get upper right sided pain and acidic foamy stool. But in the beginning all I had was the occasional pale stool and its been escalating over the years.

But the reason I asked about you being on a PPI is because they can also cause pale stool.

Sherry, no..I don't take prilosec. This has been going on since the beginning of the year. I got an ultrasound in Feb and it looked fine but it is more consistent and lighter in color. Maybe its my gallbladder as well..I have no pain or foamy stool..yet. Very frustrating..

Since this is ongoing, push your doc for an MRCP...best to have it checked out.

could the white be mucus? And you go only once a day?

It can mean not enough bile going through.


Maybe the doc should have you do some stool samples too.

is not mucous and yes once or twice a day, that part is wonderful but i am not in a flare right now..whew. My doc needs to do something! He gets back from
vacation on 16th. In the meantime i am driving myself nuts. Read some stuff on pancreas as well. scary stuff!

Are you having any pain in either upper quadrants?

So easy to read scary stuff and freak out...been there about the PSC...but once your doc gets back from vacation, hopefully you'll be able to have the discussion for further testing.
