Little background first - I was diagnosed with UC about 3 years ago, and I'm 37 now. They had me on masalamine for a year which did nothing. I switched my GI doc and they put me on cort enemas, which helped within three days. I've been on them for about a year and want to taper off. The GI said I should do one day Rowasa and one day Cort enema for about a month. Then every third day Cort for another month, then go to only once a week with Cort and stay on Rowasa - pretty scary idea when you're feeling pretty good. Anyone else have a taper schedule that worked?
WIthin the last year I've also started seeing a natural doctor in my area. He opened my eyes to how important diet is in helping with UC - my GI doc said diet and stress have nothing to do with it.
He's had me on a stricter diet than SCD for about 3 months, and it's pretty amazing. Not only is my UC feeling better but my allergies are almost gone, my concentration at work is better, etc. It's definitely not easy - everyone in the house is eating better now, but they still eat things like muffins and stuff that smell so good, but I can't eat them.
I've also lost about 30 pounds and don't want to lose anymore, so I'm buying cook books tailored towards my diet. You can check out Doug Kauffman's Eating your way to good health. It's a little stricter than SCD (I quit dairy also), but he also has some recipes in it to help out.
