Has anyone been diagnosed in connection with your IBD?
I have been reading a book about IBD and it mentions this lower-back arthritis, and a lot of the issues sound so familiar.

Sitting here with my lower back throbbing right now. Stretching and core strengthening exercises help, but it still plagues me sometimes.

I am amazed that you should mention this now. I have been suffering from right hip pain followed b severe pain in my lower back and right buttox. My rheumy gave me injections in both the hip and the saccro-iliac junction. X-rays showed severe arthritis in that joint.

I just started on myofascial physical therapy..I have not been able to exercise for weeks because of the pain and the therapy brought on pain severe enough to prevent sleep. I can't find a comfortable way to sleep or sit. To sit I need to sit forward to put all my wieght on my thighs. I sure look funny.

Yesterday, I started to take boswella and am now have some relief.

How is this condition related to UC?

I have Crohn's and then soon after was diagnosed with sacroilitis and ultimately anykylosing spondylitis [AS]. Currently my AS is more of an issue than my Crohn's.

Ledaebel, I sit like that also. Sometimes my most comfortable position is standing behind a chair and holding the top of the chair back. My arthritis and SI problems actually started a bit before my UC became apparent.

My 21 year old son had terrible pains in his hips from aged 11. Finally at 16 diagnosed with AS then at 18 he got UC too. Any tips on treating the 2 naturally? All linked, all inflammatory and often people have the hla-b27 gene like him.

ledaebel, the book didn't go into detail about how they are connected, and there isn't much info out there about sacroiliitis on the web (much more about its big brother, Ankylosing Spondylitis)

My best guess is that it has to do with the large amount of inflammation we deal with in our intestines, which are situated near the sacroiliac joint? But that is just a guess.

Heat and ice are my best friends with the pain. I guess I am fairly lucky in that mine only flares really badly during my menstrual cycle. But when it flares, I am useless. I can't handle anything.

Vanilla Bean, I have found a little relief from Boswella and Curcumin. I'm surprised about how quickly it takes effect. I still limp and have trouble getting into a comfortable position to sleep and I can only drive for a short intervals.

Franny 19, I thought most of us with UC had leaky gut syndrom. How does it relate to hip-back joint pain?

I think a lot of people have sacroiliac pain, period. There is an increased association of lower back pain with UC, and sometimes that is because of ankylosing spondylitis, but usually it is not.

Perhaps people with UC are more susceptible to lower back issues because we are less active? Too much straining at the toilet? I don't think anyone has the answer.

I've had SI pain for most of my adult life, and after a LOT of investigations and studies the main conclusion is that I have arthritic changes at L5/S1 (the most common place of spinal osteoarthritis) which apparently causes a mechanical dysfunction in my pelvis. I also think I have stretchy ligaments - my SI joints are usually out of whack. In my 20s I learned some stretches to get them back into the right position.

Here is my best advice:
1. ABSOLUTELY GET PHYSICAL THERAPY. At the least, you will learn how to self treat SI pain. At best, you will feel a lot better.
2. KEEP YOUR CORE STRONG. REALLY STRONG.
3. KEEP YOUR HAMSTRINGS, CALVES and HIP FLEXORS flexible. This means stretching. Often.
4. LEARN HOW TO SIT PROPERLY in your car and at your desk. Get an ergonomic evaluation at work if this is available to you.
5. KEEP YOUR FEET HEALTHY. There's a really strong connection between bunions and lower back pain. Seriously.

Ledaebel, when we were looking into this it was something to do with the bacteria escaping due to leaky gut and settling in the sacroilleac joints. I will check my facts and come back.

When I was 1st diagnosed with UC I had a terrible siege of inflammation in the sacrum. It felt like the lower part of my torso was encased in cement! The hydrocortisone retention enemas my doctor RXed for UC eventually healed both sites, but it took a few months. In later flares my left hip got involved, rather than the sacrum. These are extrasystemic manifestations of UC which hopefully will stop bothering you when your colon gets to remission. / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
