Curious what side effects you have experienced with Prednisone. My
GI wants me to take 30mg but I need to take it in a liquid because I am
unable to swallow pills.

Currently on Hydrocortisone enema at night and Rowasa in the morning.

Getting relief but still having symptoms, so my Dr wants to switch to Prednisone.

Short Term side effects I experienced: increased energy, increased appetite.

Long Term side effects (after 9 months of broken use): weakened skin (creation of stretch marks), moon face, buffalo hump, slightly high cholesterol, high blood pressure

At 5 days I dev moon face and super sensitivity, crying, rage, hopelessness, I stop taking immediately. I wasn't warned and had no idea how I Would be affected! I might have been able to cope had I known, good luck

Are you saying that your doctor wants to switch you from Hydrocortisone enema at night and Rowasa in the morning to just plain prednisone, as in you will not be taking anything along with the prednisone? That is a huge mistake because even though prednisone can work quite well at getting you out of a flare, it will not keep you there after you quit taking it. You should always be on maintenance meds along with the prednisone so that when you taper the prednisone back, hopefully the maintenance meds will continue to keep you in remission. Once you get off the pred, if you are not anything else, there is almost a 100% chance that your UC will return and it won't take long. Prednisone is not a cure, it only works while you take it and you cannot take it long term due to the hundreds of millions of side effects.

No, I would still be on the Rowasa and will begin Colozal again once flare is under control. He just wants to swamp steroids.

I'm 9 days in at 40mg, getting some acne and I have been getting super winded when I workout - although these workouts are supposed to wind you, I am getting more winded than I would normally. Hard to catch my breath. Other than that, feel great.

I'm just curious - why are you unable to swallow the prednisone pills? Do you have anxiety to swallow pills? Because I do. I used to crush them which tastes awful but I rather do that than choke on it. It has gotten better and I'm able to swallow small pills now.

Yes, it's a mental thing. I'm 36 and have never been able to swallow a pill. That's why Colozal is the only oral med I can take because the capsule can be opened and eaten with applesauce. My Dr wants me to go on Prednisone but it's a liquid form, not pill form.

I experience acne and increased appetite while on prednisone. There's a lot of possible side effects with prednisone, not everyone gets them all, but everyone gets some of them. Other side effects people experience are: increased energy, increased appetite which can lead to weight gain, insomnia, moon face, increased body hair, acne, and so forth. Those side effects only last while you are on high dosages of the medication, take a few weeks to set in, diminish as the dosage is lowered, and disappear once you are off of pred. There are longterm risks for staying on pred, but generally a short course of it is prescribed.

The weight gain from pred is not just a result of increased appetite and eating more. You can gain weight with no increase in calories while on prednisone. It slows your metabolism down so you could experience weight gain at a caloric intake you normally lose weight. That is according to my GI.

horrible acne, insane rapid hair growth, irritability, mood swings, appetite increase at a higher dose.... insomnia

My Dr wants me to take 30mg of liquid. Has anyone tried liquid over pill form? Are the side effects any different?

I've never tried the liquid. A steroid is a steroid, no matter the medium in which it is delivered. So, yes, the side effects are the same.

If you can't swallow a pill with water use applesauce. Put some applesauce on a spoon then put your pill on that. You can swallow that without even knowing you have a pill in it. I do several at a time. Even the huge pills go down with no problem.
