Is joint and muscle pain common

I was diagnosed with UC in 2010 and am currently taking humera. I am currently in remission from a flare that started in the beginning of the year. My challenge now seems to bee several aches and pains especially in my hips, lower back and wrist. I have gone to several drs and have been told arthritis, bursitis and tendinitis . The last dr I saw today said he had worked in a GI office and believes my pains are associated with my UC and is sending me to a rheumatologist. Interested in hearing if anyone else experiences similar problems. I'm hoping this isn't a long term challenge as I am an active person but this is really slowing me down.

You should be tested for the HBLA27 gene. My son has UC but he also has ankylosing spondylitis - all inflammatory conditions and all linked.

The rheumatologist will hopefully do the testing to zone in on what the other causes of your pains could be.

If you're already on Humira, I would assume that if you had AS, you'd be getting some relief.

Do make sure you have bone scans as well as a back x-ray...sometimes osteoarthritis can certainly be part of the mix.

As well, if you're on prednisone, that can also cause your pain, weakening of back muscles and degeneration of discs/bone/joints.

Please make sure you get your calcium and for sure vitamin D and B levels checked.

Biologic drugs, Imuran and 6MP also can create severe arthritic pains. That was my experience- UC itself never gave me any joint pains but Remicade, Humira, and Imuran all gave me joint pains (eventually becoming severe) that went away rapidly whenever I'd stop the offending drug. Just pointing out that it may be the Humira and not the UC. At the very least, worth getting antibodies tested.
