Since 2011, a couple of studies have found increased risk, so clinical best practices have been changing, but audits have found some lag of best practices being used.
At two times increased risk in general, and six times increased risk of UC patients under 20 (1.2% ) they should be using precautions. A study of practices in Australia just found that about
half of severe colitis hospitalization patients did not get precautions.

Patients with IBD are at twice the risk of VTE, with risk corresponding to the level of disease activity[10] and increased with being an inpatient. Thus, VTE prophylaxis, compression stockings and low molecular weight heparin should be utilized. In our audit, despite one patient having bilateral sub-massive pulmonary embolism who declined prophylaxis, 47% of patients did not receive any VTE prophylaxis. This is clearly an area for improvement, which is likely to be improved with heightened awareness and a protocol-based approach to management.
