Now a study at five hospitals nationwide finds that three out of 20 endoscopes that are inserted in the rectum to examine the colon for cancer retained bits of “biological dirt” from past patients, putting people at risk for hepatitis and infection.

“Three out of 20 is an unexpectedly high number of endoscopes failing a cleanliness criterion,” Marco Bommarito, an investigator with 3M’s infection prevention division, which conducted the study, told the Los Angeles Times. “Clearly, we’d like no endoscopes to fail a cleanliness rating.”

The study, presented at the annual conference for the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., found that rates for colon dirt were as high as 30 percent for reusable endoscopes used for upper gastrointestinal exams, the Times reported.

It boggles my mind that something that is inserted up someone's butt isn't thoroughly disinfected. I have a scope of my j pouch coming up....great. Yuck.

Oh dear!!! I truly need to stop reading things that scare me...I am already horrified enough that there is no cure for what we have...no need for more bad news! But that is absolutely atrocious if they don't clean that stuff thoroughly!

It doesn't surprise me. The statistics show that people generally get sicker in hospitals -- whether it's unsanitary equipment, unnecessary use of prescription medications or just bugs in the air, it's not a place you want to be unless your life is on the line.

The lack of oversight in our medical system lends itself to flaws like these.

Well did you know that the FDA allows...

...up to 145 bug parts and 5 rodent hairs inside a jar of peanut butter.

...and 20 maggots in a can of mushrooms...

...and 105 fruit fly eggs and their maggots in a regular size can of spaghetti sauce!

So I don't know which is grosser!!!

You know, I was recently in the hospital, and sometimes when I was in the bathroom, I would see this maggot looking thing crawl out from under the door of the bathroom, I was so disgusted. It was terribly unsanitary. It was a little tiny maggot that looks like those in that movie "Slither"...you can look it up..and it is just a tiny version of that it was probably like 4mm in length. I was terrified to say anything and it was so nasty just being there...I was waiting for the day they came to tell me I had something new from just being there for the 27 days that I was. Thank God nothing happened, but I honestly will consider a different hospital if I ever have to go again. God help me I may never have to.

I'm sure the FDA is doing the best they can.... It's a lot better than if we didn't have them there, ya know? I'm glad I'm off most processed food. But I'm sure there's variances throughout all foods. Even water.

look at it this way- not only do you get scoped & biopsied, hopefully preventing colon cancer, but you also get a free, 1 time only, fecal transplant. I imagine most of us eat so many bugs, maggots, fly eggs, etc. on a daily basis.... there's no way to prevent it, really. Funny enough, I've never gotten sicker while in the hospital, or seen any "dirty" things. And I know they're pretty gross places.

I never realized how many bugs we probably eat until I started growing my own fruits and veggies. I would spend 15 minutes with tweezers picking little worms out of the nooks and crannies in a broccoli head. Then there would still be a few more after I blanched it for the freezer.

I know no one else would take that much time to clean it, so I know I must have eaten hundreds if not thousands of these little green worms before. I decided the only thing to do was not think about it, or I'd never eat again!

I just read an article recently about a tribe I think in Africa with about zero outside contact who hunted and ate basically raw meat, colons and all (seriously). The researchers did tests on the things these people were consuming and of course it had all kinds of bugs, parasites, and bacterias. Some of these people lived short lives but many of them lived long lives, disease free for the most part.

I am not surprised at all. I've always wondered about this. While it's awful to think about, it's good to know my craziness it's 100% hypochondria.
