Prednisone - Before or After food?

For those who take prednisone tablets, do you guys usually take it before or after food?
I remember last year when I was diagnosed, I would always take it before my supper so that it wasn't the last thing I tasted, since the prednisone tastes absolutely awful and if I eat it after it leaves that taste in my mouth and throat for a bit. However now I've started on them again since I'm in a flare after about a year of remission, and the pharmacist tells me to take it after food, yet before I always took it before supper.
Does it really matter?

What do you guys do (for those who are on the prednisone tablets).
Do you take it before or after your food?
And what time of day do you take yours in?

I take mine at dinner.

I've had to take it recently, and I've been taking it right after a big meal..then I'll usually eat something a little sweet to get rid of the taste

I take mine in the morning, and I take it DURING eating..Cause I too hate the taste. :)

I also prefer to take mine in the morning and not at night because it makes it super hard for me to sleep!

I've been drinking cranberry juice for swelling, can't say for sure if it's helped or not. Elevating legs above the heart has helped.

Always take it with food. Taking it on an empty stomach can cause stomach irritation and severe bleeding.

So from what I've gathered it seems everyone believes that it should not effect your UC based on
whether you eat it before or after eating something. Also it should not effect your UC based on what time of day you take it in.

Some people here apparently even split their dosage throughout the day, but is that wise?
I was never actually told if I was allowed to split the dosage or not.

And it seems the majority of people take their prednisone in the morning as opposed to myself where I take mine at supper. Is this just a coincidence or should I possibly switch to taking it in the morning?

I don't really care about how it should effect anything else other than my UC mainly because I don't usually get stomach problems from it and I'm able to sleep very easily at night.

Always take pred with food- pref. a true meal or at least decent snack.

Whether to split it or not is purely a matter of what works best for you. Patients hospitalized with severe UC and on IV steroids are not given a morning burst followed by nothing for 24 h... Rather they are given iV's every few hours to keep a constant blood concentration in there. Myself, when I was on pred (I got surgery- end ileo- extremely pleased with life now), I always broke it up into at least twice per day doses, otherwise my nights would see a worsening of symptoms.

I have also read from the book by Jefferies ("Safe uses of cortisol") that it is the amount if cortisol in the blood significantly in excess of normal physiologic dose that causes any and all toxic effects in the body, and thus even low doses will be of much (or even negligible) toxicity if they are spread out into say 4 doses per day rather an all at once. Spreading doses in any case worked beat for me in minimizing the dose I needed without getting symptoms, which is the name of the game while one waits for something else to give you sustained remission. I realize that some docs believe in alternate day doses etc but my experience was the complete opposite in terms of what worked for me.

If you find your symptoms are worst at night you might benefit from splitting the dose instead of taking it all at once in the morning with breakfast. You shouldn't take steroids after 4 PM but it's OK to spread throughout the day otherwise. Always with food.

You are not causing any major complications by taking it with supper. It really makes no difference but you do need to take it with food and usually it is better to take it all at once. For most people it is much better to take it all at once in the morning with food. Are your tablets 5mg? If you want to change to taking it in the morning what I would do is take 4 tablets with supper tomorrow followed by 4 the next morning and then take all 8 the next morning. Don't stress yourself out too much over all this.

Not sure about the dosage timing issue here as it says not to double dose on the information, I'll leave that to someone who can answer for sure.

Eat first then take the prednisone. You may not feel it now but the long term effects can be pretty bad. As far as taking it in the morning/evening, for the most part it is said to take them in the morning because many people have trouble sleeping when taking prednisone at night. That's really the main reason. I take mine around 11am even though the bottle clearly says 9am because I don't wake up that early and it seems to work perfectly fine/no trouble sleeping (I sleep around 1-2am)
