When you pull up a forum on Ulcerative colitis to read the posts more frequently than checking CNN, ESPN, EBAY, Amazon, or any other website on the Internet.

When you're working on punctuation with your child and you ask "What's a colon?", and he gets a really confused look on his face and says, "Isn't that something that's in your butt?"

Made me realize how confusing the English language must be for someone trying to learn it.

I believe I'd remind the pharmacist of just how much trouble he'd be in when I dropped a HIPAA complaint on his butt!

You know you have uc when:

  • your adhere to a diet not because you need to loose weight (in fact you could probably use a few extra pounds) but rather to keep your gut from rebellion and causing you discomfort.
  • you are going commando not for the perceived freedom or to be sexy for your partner but because you had an accident.
  • when eating something is less about the olfactory enjoyment of said food and more about how pleasantly it will pass through the other end.
  • when certain foods scare you because of how they just might come out on the other side

You know you have UC when:

Your friends and family switch to keeping Tylenol in their purse because they know you can't use Ibuprofen

You send a graduation invite to your GI because you get to know them so well

Your mom and sister can tell when you're flaring by what type of Subway you get

You're up to date on the current waiting room magazines

You know more about certain drugs and side effects than WebMD

You know which places have the best public restrooms. My vote is for Dunkin Donuts!

Additionally, you get a brief 2 second panic attack when someone  cuts you off on your way to the bathroom. (I have learned to have my friends run picks NBA style and lead block for me NFL style so I have a clear path hahaha)

You have absolutely no shame in discussing poo size, shape and color to anybody who is willing to listen!

You have mastered the fine art of determining fart or poo? (Sometimes it isn't always foolproof, but I've gotten better!)

You know you have UC when your significant other always asks if you need the restroom before they use it, even if you were just in there.

 If you have several sizes of pants in your closet, and have fit into all of them in the past year

When I got my Rowasa they put it in a big paper bag.....oh, the shame.........
someone already mentioned having backup underwear......when you have UC you have backup underwear in your purse, glove box, work desk and bike pannier. Cuz you never know......

When your six year old comes downstairs to tell you the play he and his brother are putting on is ready and that there is a bathroom right next door to the "theater" (aka his bedroom) just in case.

When you can hang up the phone on anybody you can't be bothered to speak to by saying "sorry. I need the toilet" and they never ask for any further details.

You know you have uc when...

  • You are confident you don't have to poop, hop in the car, get 1/4 of a mile down the road, and have to stop and poop at a dunkin donuts.
  • You have the Houdini poop. It comes out solid but after a couple minutes in the bowl, it crumbles to pieces.
  • When you see something like someone running down a hallway, a car pulled over on the side of the road, and the first thing that comes to mind is : "oh they must've had to poop".
  • You go to your GIs office apointment excited with a big mental list of things to ask him/her about: a new oral biologic for RA you saw on tv, a thought about a supplement or diet idea, and are disappointed apon leaving that you forgot to ask about one!
  • When you visit your GIs office, you know all the staff by name, and a nurse jokes they should name a new wing of the building in your name (happened last time I went lol).
  • If my home is my castle, my toilet is my throne, then you'll know where to find me.
