You wanted to tell your relative something a lot more hurtful than what she said to you. If she hurt you, it was inadvertently. You wanted to hurt her deliberately.
Your cousin has been lucky as hell with their Crohn's. I suppose the luckiest thing of all would have not been to have developed Crohn's, but if you are going to have it: by golly, that's the equivalent of winning the Crohn's lottery. Fair play to him; I'm glad somebody with this disease has suffered so little. But I would tell him to his face he was darned lucky for having such a mild variant.
Of course, when I say lucky, I would be referring exclusively to the Crohn's, because I know literally nothing else about
your cousin.
But I would have absolutely no shame in telling him that he was lucky in reference to that. But I'd also tell somebody who won a million pounds on the lottery they were lucky.
Guess I'll just have to keep on commiting social faux pas. God knows who I've offended in the past. Edit: Eva Lou's post honestly wasn't there before I replied! Edit 2: And now I have read it, I'm exactly the same about
not commenting on people's personal appearances. I never tell somebody they look thin, fat, gorgeous or whatever. So by extension I also probably wouldn't tell somebody that they were 'lucky' to be able to eat what they liked and not put on weight. But I'm sympathetic to the feelings behind it. Because I can place myself in another person's shoes. Occasionally.
