Hi,
I was diagnosed with UC January 13, even though i had a flare in 2011.. i just didnt know what it was.
I have been perscribed with Prednisone and Salofalk, a Probiotic, Antibiotics and as nothing made any improvement i was hospitalized for a week.
After that, doctor said i could eat almost anything except for spices, sauces and fritures. I have been taking prednisone for quite some time and have experienced a lot of side effects.
I have also suffered significant weight loss (about
30lbs), joint pain and "acne" or some sort of spots/eczema.
After a few months doctor kept me only on Salofalk, and recently ( couple of months ) UC is back and its bad.
Its not that i have a lot of pain, because i dont, but everytime i go to the toilet there is blood, and of course diarrhea.
I started a SCD diet one week ago, basically on chick soup, carrots, chicket meat and eggs.
I feel a lot better and i have had days in wich i only went 2 or 3 times to the toilet. yet, still diarrhea and a lot of blood.
Any idea on how long until i get better results ? i should also start adding other items to my diet, but, at the same time no real progress has been made. Any advice ?

What type of Salofalk are you using?
If you have not used a rectal enema then that is something to add to your meds. It was the only med that ever helped me and made bleeding stop because it works right at the area that bleeds. Oral meds never did anything good for me. I never had pain either.
Diet modification got me to remission and going gluten-free was a BIG positive for me even though medical tests said I was not celiac. Doctors do not support diet mod. for IBD but since Rx meds weren't doing anything for me (except the enema) I kept trying diet until it finally worked. I was not an overnight success and scd did not get me there but was a start in the right direction.
Part of what is helping you right now is that you are eating "low residue" foods, meaning low fiber. That gives your gut a rest, which is good. Try adding well cooked spinach also. Cooked carrots were my "go to" food back when things were bad, plus meat is always good for me.
Start keeping a food journal and figure out what causes problems for you.
Get those enemas and start using them (don't settle for the suppositories--they don't do enough).

Hi, thanks for your reply!
Doc kept me on oral salofalk, but once during a flare i was pescribed with salofalk enemas wich stoped the bleeding in 3 or 4 days. So i guess this is what works for me, and maybe i should forget granulate salofak wich i have been taking since the beggining (and until the end of my days, says the doctor).
Im going to refill perscript
ions tomorrow and will ask for salofalk enema. In the meanwhile i will keep up with my diet and start the food journal. Since i started reading all these posts, i realised how much it makes sense!
Thanks :)

hey lordrods,
i noticed improvement with SCD within the first day but then it kind of stayed the same. it mainly decreased my frequency so i could gain weight but i still had the runs and blood most of the time- was on it 16 months. ever since i add resistant starches to my diet, my poops have been pretty much perfect.
i know elaine says to stay on it one month and then evaluate.

i'm eating 1 green banana in the morning in my kefir smoothie and then a cold baked potato or sweet potato for dinner. i don't enjoy the taste of any of it, especially cold potatoes blehh i can't figure out how to make good potato salad.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply bananagirl. Im new to most terminology and i had never heard of "resistant starches" before!
I eat banana ocasionally, and have never noticed anything good or bad regarding it. Nevertheless, i just got my prescript
ions for Salofalk, both granulate and enema and will restart treatment, along with the diet to improve results.

Hi,
Question here.. Are peanuts a bad ideia ?
I ve been eating peanuts for the last couple of days to supress that hunger feeling of eating no carbs.
Im also back on meds for 2 days now, Salofalk ( Oral ) and Pentasa ( Enema ).
Blood seems to be gone, but i still have severe D and im going to the WC 5 -6 -7 times a day for the last days.
Other than this i still with my SCD diet, and started a journal of everything i eat or drink to keep track.

Peanuts are fine if your gut can handle the fiber, mine likes almond butter but a little goes a long way.
Eliminating wheat carbs took some getting used to and finding the right food to eat was a challenge at times.
How are you at baking? There are lots of Paleo and SCD cookbooks that use almond flour in place of wheat flour for
cookies. I made carrot or zucchini cake with almond flour or almond butter and shredded veggies. Easy to eat too much so watch the fiber intake, problems for a wounded gut.
Eating high calorie food with good oils like olive oil or coconut oil can help hunger pangs. Do you like guacamole? Mayonnaise is a fave of mine and it's really nothing more than oil and lemon and salt. Great with veggies, tuna, turkey, etc.
Resistant starch such as cold potatoes to make potato salad with some celery is one of my happy foods.

Im from Europe.. i never actually ate guacamole in my life :) but it seems nice and easy to do. ill probably like it.
Havent used Mayonnaise for a lot of months now.. always though it would be a bad idea, but as you say.. its not more than oil, lemon and salt.. gonna try that in a couple of weeks.
I dont really bake, but i had already seen recipes with almond flour in the SCD book. Ill try that whenever i get cravings for something that looks like a desert.
The sweet potatoes are "ilegal" for SCD, but maybe ill give it a try. if it doesnt work i go back to carrots!
I ll introduce stuff as i go along and journal everything to see what works for me. Lets see how the meds+diet combo work for the next week.
Thanks a lot for all the info!
