Flying with mesalamine enemas

Does anyone know if I can check mesalamine enemas in my suitcase or do I have to carry it on? I saw on the box to store at room temperature, but it for excursions it can go down to 59 degrees. I am not sure how cold it gets in cargo. Has anyone checked them before? I would rather not carry them on...

I have done both but if you check and your bag gets lost you are in trouble! When I carried I put then in a clear bag and put them on top. I had visions of some mean tsa pulling them out and holding them up for inspection! It just doesn't happen. Put them in your carry on and just move thru! Good luck

I was just thinking about this too.. as DMC says, if they get lost you're in trouble. I would imagine in winter temps it gets cold too… i have salofalk, they're individually packaged… is yours the same? since it's labelled as medication it won't be an issue to go over the liquids limit. it's just too bad all the space they take up!

Thanks for the reply. I am traveling with a one year old (who, from previous experience hates traveling) and a dog. I already feel like I have enough crap to carry on, so I was trying to reduce the amount I need to carry. I guess I will decide once I see how much room I have. Oh, the stress of traveling. Can't be good for my UC :(

I have to travel with enemas (hydrocort) this week, I didn't even think about the cargo temps. Hmmm...

Here are the rules from the TSA www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/medically-necessary-liquids

I've printed them out before to bring to the airport with me and I ended up showing them to the TSA agent because they didn't know what they were talking about.

If you wanted to loosely interpret the last sentence at the TSA website you may be able to carry a separate carry-on bag for your medicine.

Cardinal rule for IBDers: when preparing to travel, DEAL WITH YOUR RX MEDS 1st!!!!!!!!!! Make sure you can lay hands quickly on what helps you most in a UC emergency. I have also taken the retention enemas in carry-ons because the risk of loss with checked luggage seemed too scary, especially going abroad. / Old Hat (33 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I have carried in check-in luggage without any issue. 3 times I did that, I mentioned that to the desk agent at the time of checking and all 3 times, they made some notes on their machines.

Should be no issues in hand luggage, but I do not want to 'explain' them in front of everyone. TSA agents are not known for their cordial behavior.

I've traveled with some in carry-on and some in checked luggage. As long as they are clearly marked as meds with visible prescription info you should have no problem.

Would not worry about temp. in cargo.
I had my car transported on a tractor trailer from Florida to New England with a box of rectal meds in the trunk. :-)
