If I didn't take Prednisone, would I be dead?

I had pancolitis and my ferritin was low. I was having bouts of episodes of diarrhea constipation and lots of blood once every 2 weeks for about 5 weeks, and bouts got worse the days leading up to diagnose. Once after prednisone didnt go toliet for about 2 days and all was fine after. Symptoms came back after tapering so went back up and tapered more slowly untill all was well.

If I didnt take prednisone was death a legitimate outcome?

Asacol takes time and so does immunosuppressants, yes? So steroids only option to prevent bleeding?

The doctor wrote me a letter as he thought I was going to have to go to hospital, but I responded well to prednisone so didnt need to.

No is short. The reality is though if you did not get on to an alternative medication to control your bleeding you would eventually be admitted to hospital for iv steroids (prednisone again basically) and be recommended to have surgery or cyclosporin

UC is usually not going to kill you, in most cases.

Nope. With uncontrolled uc, you'd likely be admitted to the hospital with dehydration (from the diarrhea), anemia (from the blood loss), and possibly abdominal pain.

You wouldn't die, unless you didn't go to the hospital and get help.

i definitely think this disease could easily kill someone if you go untreated- as in you don't go to the doctor when you're flaring and just stay home and wait.

dehydration from diarrhea, anemia from blood loss, nutrient malabsorption, starvation, colon perforation, toxic megacolon, blockage.

I'm new and keep wondering too if I would just die in agony somewhere if I lose my insurance, or just from one of these crazy complications or side effects in general. I have two little ones, so I really need to stop reading about things lol. It sounds like as far as diseases go, we aren't about to keel over tomorrow though.

Back in the 30's and 40's mortality rates were around 20% for UC Now I think I've read it's 1%. No doubt steroids have played a big role in that.

Lucky us!!!! Seriously.
