I was diagnosed with UC Sept of 2013. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks and had tons of bleeding, cramping, you name it, I had it. Comes to find out I had C-diff on top of it all. My GI put me on prednisone, imuran, lialda and another med which i cant remember the name of. I stopped taking the imuran because of side effects and now am only on lialda. On Christmas eve I started having diarrhe again and its progressed since then. Ive gone 11 times today. I went to my family doctor who took a stool sample and said there is no blood so she didnt feel like Im having a flare. She checked for C-diff but the mos accurate test takes 3-4 days. I guess my questions are is there always blood during a flare and what are the signs of a flare? Since I had a flare and c-diff at the same time I dont know the distinction between the two.

you could definitely be flaring or it could be c diff again. bleeding is not the only flare symptom- diarrhea, urgency, frequency, and cramping are all symptoms of a flare. did you take antibiotics for the c diff??
i've had the combo (UC and c diff) and you're right, it's pure hell. i always thought i'd never feel worse from my UC but having c diff on top of that is just AWESOME.
i'd wait to see what the stool sample says.
if you're c diff is negative, then you are just flaring and the lialda isn't working. you will probably need a biologic if you can't take imuran.

Thank you for the comment! I do have urgency with some bm's and cramping. Im sorry you had to go through HELL as well. Cdiff is not fun on top of a flare. I will wait for the results and hopefully this doesnt land me in the hospital again.

I did take vancomycin for the cdiff and it helped a lot. I heard its likely to come back once youve had it so it is a possibility.

You don't have to have blood to be flaring. It could be either one of the two or even both. You need to see a qualified doc ASAP. If it is C-Diff it needs to be addressed immediately and if it is UC you need to resume more treatment for that as well. I just made another post regarding C-Diff. Doctors really need to step up to the plate better on this and not only make sure the treatment you are getting is working but after treatment is over it needs to be verified that the C-Diff is gone. Far too many doctors aren't diligent about this and just wait to see if you complain about getting worse.

I agree, i dont understand why it takes so long to get cdiff results back. When i had it in aug-sept my 3 test came back negative. I was transferred to a better hospital and they automatically told me the test was positive for cdiff. I will go back there asap. I do hope this is a flare. I will look for your post on cdiff. Thank you!
