I get something similar to a flex sig every year for routine check up of my j pouch. I never have sedation because I want to get in and out of there as fast as possible plus I don't have to have someone drive me. It doesn't hurt...a little uncomfortable. However, someone in a flare who is inflamed may have more discomfort.

I don't know what you people are talking about when you say it didn't hurt! ;)

I know everyone is different, I just found it a painful experience.

I have to be sedated for flex sigs. I tried twice w/out and they ended up sedating me 1/2 way through. My UC is primarily severe proctitis. And it was too painful when tried to do last scopes. Now my chart just says "sedate for procedures." I'm a-ok w/ it!

Only ever had 1 flex sig and it's weird: the prep is forever seared into my mind, while the procedure itself is a complete blank: I don't remember going to the waiting room, having the test, or the aftermath. For that reason I couldn't even tell you for definite if I was sedated, but since I'm a complete coward, I probably was.

The prep on the other hand... Do you guys normally use enemas for your preps? Because I was in hospital at the time and I was given an enema. The nurse (or whoever he was) assured me it would take about 15 minutes to kick in; 30 seconds later I was screaming at him to get out, I needed to go now >_>. Cue the most wretched half hour of cold BMs (such a horrible feeling...) and unbearable cramps.

Only took enemas one more time after that, and that was the night before surgery. Similarly hellish experience. If you take enemas every night, you're my hero.

Hmm twisted ovarian cyst (told it's as painful as childbirth) and another instance of pain that morphine didn't touch. I've been through some pain. Hope I never get a kidney stone!

NCOT - those enemas are very different than the medication enemas for UC. The medication enemas stay in the colon/rectum. They can sometimes cause cramping, but not generally. Those enemas for preps are icky. They are designed to come out and bring everything with them. Not to mention, you are pouring salt water on potential wounds!

@ActiveUCer - Ah okay. Yes, that makes sense. I should have realised the medication type of enema was designed to be retained, not expelled as fast as humanly possible!

Still, I'm glad I never needed to take rectal meds. (Had pancolitis, but my rectum was "relatively spared" in the medical jargon.)

The urgency/cramping I felt with those enemas was on par with the urgency and cramping I would feel with my UC.
