thrombosed hemmy ruining my life

Hey guys. As many of you know, I've been dealing with a hemorrhoid from hell since about Christmas time. Despite sitz baths and witch hazel treatment; this monster has partially thrombosed. Being unable to walk/stand without wincing, I went to GP. She got me vicodin and immediately set me up with Surgery. They got me in earliest today at 145.

No one could/would tell me what procedure i was having. I was super frustrated. And even more so once I saw the surgeon. Basically I was having a surgery consult. unless he was able to cut and drain it, which he said was not possible to he did not. Basically I can have a hemorrhoid-ectomy next Tuesday if I choose. He does not gaurentee that surgery will give me a quicker or less painful recovery.
he said for how much pain im in now, its about the same.

So money wise surgery seems dumb. Having a doctors excuse off work; surgery seems smart.

No pain killers given even though he admits im in a "considerable" amount of pain.

So basically I was told; im sorry you can't sit, lay, stand or walk. Im sorry you have UC and that every one of your 10 craps a day is going to hurt more than you can imagine. Hope you feel better.

Im so lost having left this appointment. Just utterly defeated. Feeling so depressed. I have an ice pack on my head and one crammed up my crack right now. Neither is helping as much as I wish.

I did a sitz bath. Got some hemorrhoid suppositories but couldnt get one in.
I made my own witch hazel pads with round cotton I think make up pads and just soak em in witch hazel and stick up in there. Helps for a little bit.

He prescribed me lidocaine. .. but then never called in the prescription .
my calmoseptine is helpful but almost awkward. Awkward is better than severe pain though.

He suggested bulking up my stool. So I guess im back on the psyllium husk for now. Had some mashed carrots tonight.

Husbands job has Sick Spouse pay... so hes off tonight and tomorrow with me. Big snow storm coming tmrw.
Acquired a percocet. Hoping to get some sleep.

Really really bummed about this. Could use any help, advice, well wishes.

I had a thrombosed hemorrhoid a few years ago. It broke on its own, and the relief was instantaneous. I didn't find that many OTC/home remedies helped much, but three offered some relief:
a squirt bottle instead of toilet paper, a cold pack (wrapped in a towel, but right up against it), and zinc oxide (baby rash ointment). Until it broke, though, it was tough going, so hang in there.

I'm a little surprised he didn't lance it and remove the clot. That's something a GP/PCP should still be able to do. I hate to recommend the ER, but you might find someone willing to go a little more "old school."

He said because it has been longer than 3-4 days, the pain of lancing it would be more than what im feeling now and I wouldn't get that relief.

He also said the hemorrhoid was ulcerated. That it must have already broken open at some point (????) And that showed also that lancing it probably wouldn't be very helpful.

So far I am trying to use ice packs to keep it numb. Even with calmoseptine i get flashes of pain... im all twitchy and jumpy feeling... every 30-60 seconds I get a twinge of pain that makes me wiggle.

Starting to lessen now. Maybe because im distracting myself with the internet... who knows.

Going to take another day off work and really focus on trying to get myself to a functioning state. I can't do sitz baths at work and that seems to be the only relief! Really afraid im going to lose my comfy job because of this.
probably the only job I can really do with a UC flare.
so that's upsetting.

I had one that I assume was thrombosed also as I was in extreme pain for about 3 weeks. Mine too resolved on its own and when it did it was like it was never bothering me. I would call his office and say that he had prescribed the lidocaine but never called it in.

If you can't manage to squat on the seat (my knees would be permanently crippled if I tried that), you can sit on the toilet and prop your feet up on a stool, simulating the squatting position.

Otherwise, I have no tips but you also asked for well wishes so I am sending you those!! It sounds like you are going through hell so I wish you speedy relief and resolution.

Sorry for what you're going through embersglow...I literally know what a pain in the ass you are going through right now (and mine weren't even hemmies...which actually made it worse...as FruitGirl pointed out).

I had to crap in the tub with water because I couldn't deal with the anal pain I was having and I had some fissures on the area (being my perianal crohn's skin tags they mistook for hemmies and banded them while they were in a flared state) as well...If you can get the Lidocain RX that will be helpful for you to insert hemmie treatments and cortifoam is suppose to be helpful for severe hemmie issues as well...here's my tips...

Have a good hot sitz bath with epsom salts (lots of salt) for at least half an hour...right after the bath, put lidocain on your anus, then administer hemmie ointment/suppository and/or cortifoam rectal med immediately...do this at least 2 times a day (preferably one of them right before bed).

Yes embersglow, I realize that, but the hot epsom salt bath softens things up which is why I said immediately after getting out of the bath, use the lidocain and then insert hemmie treatment...this will work far better than not having a bath first. You can also try putting the lidocain on the tip of the cortifoam applicator as well as on the hemmie suppository.

IAS, how does the L-glutamine help with the hemmies?

The interesting fact about haemorrhoids is that they flare when you pass hard or liquid stool, seems like the extremes make it flare. That is why using metamucil (or my favourite ground psyllium seed) to bulk stool and soften them is good.

Greg, how long did you have your hemmy before you had it surgically removed?

The surgeon I met with told me he would do the surgery... but g aurenteed (especially with UC) that they would come back at some point.

Feeling pretty okay today. Had two amazing naps today.

Excited to get back to work tmrw. I do have to go see HR because I didn't have a doctors note for missing work today (Tues) but I did for Fri/Mon.

I anticipate HR would like to fire me. But this is my first (maybe second) time calling in without a doctors note in 9 months.

Pretty good for a girl with a chronic illness :D
