The spleen does help filter out impurities in the blood. It is also a major player of the immune system. Without a spleen people have to watch out more for infections and getting sick in general. There are a few instances such as E.Coli, West Nile virus, Swine flu, pneumonia, and other things which a normal person may fight off whereas I could be dead in a matter of days. That's one reason I'm not too keen on taking meds that weaken the immune system. Fortunately, my UC is not bad enough that I need to take them. Had my spleen out in 1990, got UC in 2010 so I don't believe there is a connection there, although anything is possible. I don't follow any particular diet but I do watch some things I eat and take the digestive enzyme DAO, which allows me to eat things which would normally cause me problems.
