New Dempsters Gluten Zero Bread

So the somewhat large bakery here just launched a Gluten Free bread for all the big grocery stores. Has anyone tried it yet?

I'm just wondering what all is in it ingredient wise like preservatives/additives. But darn - I'd kill for really good lunch time sandwiches.

A friend said it's pretty awesome... I'm iffy on giving it a try... but most likely will, haha.

Just found the ingredient list:

Interesting. I like it when companies try to capitalize on the gluten free craze, but fail to see the point of it. Some of the listed ingredients are allergenic and questionable, so I probably wouldn't buy it.

Canola oil (o6 content), xanthum gum, egg whites... Jeebus.

Thanks for the heads up, Mark, I'll likely try this. But, (isn't there always a but) those aren't the best ingredients so I hope I'd be able to just eat it once in a while. I'm craving a good ol' BLT or egg salad

Bahahaha... I was so totally sitting here thinking man I could maybe have a decent egg salad sandwich for lunch again.. heck it's been like 10 years!

We have a bunch of "gluten-free" breads here at one of our local stores, but when I look at the ingredients, I can't help but think there's no way I should even be thinking about ingesting at least half those ingredients.. Ive made this once before, it wasn't bad at all. Ive attempted many paleo bread recipes, and this one comes closest to what I think tastes most like "regular bread". It was fast and very easy to whip up. I don't remember if I tried it toasted but it's worth a shot if any of you would like to try it out!

This is my fave bread if I have to buy some. The jalepeno cheese is really good and the cinnamon one makes great french toast. I typically make my own and bake 4 loaves at a time to freeze. I do want to try the Katz GF Challah soon! The Katz GF chocolate glazed donuts are my current 2 x per week "treat"

I just went out and bought a loaf of this Dempsters Zero.. made an egg salad sandwich. It wasn't awesome, but it wasn't to bad. I got the whole grain version or whatever it's called. The brown one.

Wasn't like regular bread that's for sure. Kind of heavy. Not sure what to think of it yet. I guess I'll wait till tomorrow and see what my system thinks of it.

I checked out the johanns bakery thing - that looks pretty darn good - better than this Dempsters stuff.

The dempsters reminded me of Quiona Bread (or whatever it's called) but with a better taste but similar texture.

Yeah - so this sandwich last night DID NOT go over well... Wow.. Intense D, bad smelling stool, uncomfortable. I just want it out of my system now.

So much for care free gluten free eating, haha... and awesome egg salad sandwiches. I'm guessing it must have been the additives like modified cellulose that got me. More so the other day I had a carved roast beef sandwich on white bread and had perfect poop the next day.

Weird.

Also, in speaking with the friend that suggested it - she is sensitive to gluten and has found success by staying away from it. She calls me today and said she not feeling well, same symptoms as me. She said she must have ate something that was cross contaminated. I asked here if it started after eating this bread - she said no - about 24 hours later... haha... so it's for sure this bread... and something that's in it...

But this experiment and experience brings up some interesting questions. Mainly what the heck caused this reaction.

I have started making my own gf bread because I have some control of what goes in it. I just took a loaf of mock eye out of the bread machine, pretty good while super hot. The true test is how it will taste tomorrow!

are you gluten sensitive or to the additives? I just primal, but before I did i made my own bread… no knead, 4 ingredients (including water), ridiculously easy and no unknowns. of course, if it's the gluten, never mind lol. http://www.the-baker-chick.com/2013/02/no-knead-crusty-artisan-bread/

I'm going to make a new post on this - but I was going through the list of ingredients trying to see if anything really popped out at me as I knew some seemed like they may not be so rough - but the term cultured sugar stood out at me - I was like hmm.. what is that.

I googled it quickly and it seem people are saying is High Fructose Corn Syrup.. My guess is this is what did me in (but who knows really). It feels like someone kicked me in the gut. It's pretty brutal actually.

And thanks for the link callah - Maybe one day I'll give it a go and see if home made bread bother me. Never though of trying that.

I have a bread machine and make all if my own (gluten-containing) bread. And I make pizza dough as well. It's nice, because I can make a loaf of bread and use only about 10 minutes of my time, if that.

so hey Mark - any chance the egg salad added to your intestinal agony ? egg salad has always given me gut/butt issues -

maybe try the bread alone - if'n you're man enough ;-)

Hahaha- I don't think I can Man-up again for fake bread errr gluten free bread, but I know it's not the egg salad cause I eat it all the time minus the bread.

And I eat Quinoa bread pretty often which has most of the same ingredients minus the "Cultured sugar" and a few of the other not so nice stuff. Who knows. Funny the stuff we all react to. Eggs have always been a staple for me as I tolerate them the best out of any food.

Back to perfect poop again now that it's cleared my system so that's cool.

My fave GF bread is "Romeo Artisan". I get it at Metro. Tastes amazing. Aroma Cafe also makes really good GF bread as well.

yup, I don't do well with any of the gf fake bread stuff - I keep a loaf in the freezer for my occasional desires, but it never fulfills my fantasies :-(
