Hello there, im new to healing well (though ive been reading the forum for almost a year) and fairly new to uc. I began having large amounts of blood with nornal bms and was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis june 2013 while I was pregnant with my second child. I was put on canasa suppositories twice daily, within a week the blood was gone. Because I did not know much about
the disease I stopped the suppositories when the blood stopped and began bleeding again a week or so later, I started suppositories again with no luck. I began losing more and more blood. My doctor recommended me going on prednisone, knowing the side effects would do me in I declinded. I tried rowasa with no luck. I figured I could handle my symptoms until after I gave birth and hoped they would subside on their own.
November 2013 I gave birth after major complications and surgery that month due to retained plecenta i was put on antibiotics. my symptoms got continually worse, I was going to the bathroom at least 8 times a day. I went to the e.r before christmas and was put on prednisone 40mgs with canasa and flagyl and sent home. Around a week later my symptoms were the worst theyve ever been, I was going to the bathroom at least 20 times a day, severe abdominal pain lots of bleeding and watery diarrhea. I was admitted to the hospital. I stayed for 2 weeks they had me on vancro 60mg prednison and dilauded every 2 hours. They did a sigmoidoscopy and found cdif. It was the worst experience of my life hands down. After I was released within 2 days I was back. Losing buckets of blood, vomiting and not being able to leave the bathroom. So weak i could barley walk. They gave me the same medications, and started me on remicade on day 2. Within 2 hours I was drastically better. Soiled stools with no blood, I was amazed as were the doctors. I got to go home on day 4.
Because I was feeling so well and suffering severe side effects from the prednisone (no sleep for 4 days, bad anxiety) I begged my doctor to let me taper. We agreed every 3 days lowering 10 mgs.
Things went very well for almost 2 weeks when I began to lose blood again. Over the next 2 weeks the bathroom trips increased my doctor told me to go back on prednisone 40 mgs, i went around a week with no change and decided to quit it because the side effects were unbearable. and then the watery diarrhea showed up. I knew the cdif had returned. I asked my doctor to test me and sure enough it was. I was back to being so weak I couldnt get out of bed alone. 20 plus trips a day. It was terrible. I did a full 2 weeks of vancro. My symptoms stayed the same. My doctor did another sigmoid and said the cdif was gone but my colitis was now severe. He wanted to start me on imuran, I refused because the cancer risk terrified me. we planned on starting humara as I was on my 3rd remicade infusion and they were no longer working. Because I was so sick my doctor pretty much told me he was doubtful the humaria would work. He gave me delzicol until they could get clearance from my insurance for humaria. I had hardly eaten anything in 2 weeks. I lost 30 pounds in less then a month. I was weak and withering away to nothing. I could hardly keep down water.
On the 28th of February I desperately searched the Web for something, anything that I could do to free myself from this nightmare. I found posts on this site about
nicotine. I began using my husbands e cigarette that night. The next day instead of a toiled bowl full of blood I actually had some stool. My bathroom trips went from 20 to 4 in 2 days. My pain is nearly gone and now my bathroom trips are down to 3 with no blood in my last! And i am able to eat again! I can not BELIEVE it. I am so incredibly thankful for those of you who posted your experiences, it lead me to my ongoing recovery. Im still not 100% but this really seems promising! I hope my post can help someone out there, who like me was at their wits end.
