Toxic Megacolon - Know anyone who's had it?

When I was first diagnosed with UC, I worried about "Toxic Megacolon."  This is something that I read about online.  Of course, I worried that I was going to progress to that stage and die. 

But, I've never heard of anyone who has progressed that far in their disease.  Everytime I flare, I think that it is happening to me.

What do you know about it and should I be worried?

This is something that we need to file away in the back of our minds that yes it can be a possibility but it may never happen. It's best just to read about it and recognize the symptoms if it should happen. There were a couple people that have came on here a few years back that had this complication and had to be rushed in for emergency surgery.

I was diagnosed with uc after three weeks in the hospital. I was transferred to the mayo clinic in rochester mn. My uc turned into toxic megacolon and when i was in surgery having my colon removed my colon exploded. My five to six hour surgery turned into just shy of thirteen hours. I was told i had a very agressive form of the disease. My surgery was one of many that i am still dealing with. Im going ten months now with all of the issues with this disease. I am still able to have my ostomy reversed in april of this year. I guess i just ended up getting the short straw with this disease. Just the luck of the draw. I am hoping to just put this experience behind me and move on in life. From the time i got sick to having surgery was six weeks to the date. Just very fast acting with absolutely no symptoms of the disease at all. In fact my first nite stay in the hospital with this disease was the first time i had been admitted into the hospital. I was lucky to have very healthy up until that point.
