I was wondering if anyone uses Amodium to help with the diarrhea? I currently am using Simponi, Mesavant, occasionally Pentasa.

If you mean immodium, yes I have. I works really well to control loose stools and irregularity when combined with pslium husk. It works pretty slowly if you have severe watery diarrhea. It works by slowing motility rate so if that isn't the problem it will do nothing. It seems to me that if you slow things down the mesalamine drugs will work better too.

Imodium is very dangerous, possibly deadly, to take if you have formed stools.

Gary, do you think that even 1 Immodium taken with formed stools is harmful? I take it once in awhile when I am planning on going out for long periods where there may not be a restroom. I have heard people talk about
toxic colon from it, but didn't worry much since I only do it once in a while.

Well, I'm not a doctor but, if it were me, I would be afraid to do it. The big Toxic Megacolon isn't something to fool with. Do you find that it actually helps you in that regard?

The one pill seems to really help me when I need to go out. I will do some research on it before I do it again. Thanks Gary

I find it really helps a lot in times of watery diarrhea accompanied by cramps and pain, but as a rule I wouldn't take it pre-emptively, no. If you have perfectly formed stools, then there's really no need to use it.
Then you're into an anxiety issues because you are AFRAID you will be sick, and risk hurting yourself with self medicating and exposing yourself to things like toxic megacolon, etc....I think that's what Gary is trying to say....?
Just use common sense....but.....well, you know how that goes.....!

The warnings with immodium are that you should not use it as the PRIMARY treatment for UC. The maximum dose is 8 pills a day and I don't worry one bit about
taking a single pill when I have to go somewhere and am having symptoms. I do have distal disease, extremely high motitity, never constipated and mild/moderate disease. If you have pancolitis, constipation, and severe disease, you might want to avoid it. It is a pretty mild drug. It takes a 7-10 days at 8 pills a day to even slow down my stools to milk shake consistency. Personally I think some people abuse these types of meds by trying to get rock hard stools or taking the max dose out of fear of an accident without having diahrea at all. They could kill you.

Exactly.....A lot of people overuse it trying to get it to be 'normal'...using it in moderation (6-8 pills a day) won't hurt you. If you all of a sudden stop pooping, then you are probably over doing it.
The bigger warning is on things like Lomotil, which is a big no-no....

Sorry about
my spelling.
Thank you for all the advise. I would probably only take one or two depending on....
I, in no way, have formed stool. I am talking about
watery, mush!
Some days I get an anxiety attack just with the thought of having to drive to work in the morning. Wondering if I will make it.
If I need to go on a road trip, like 4 or 5 hours; my stress level goes off the chart.
Thanks

I think it is perfectly ok to take if you're having diarrhea, although I tried it as a therapy once during those times and even though it did form up my stools, I felt constipated almost 24/7. I couldn't stand the feeling of having to go all the time even though I didn't. I quit because I preferred to actually go every 2-3 hours and then feeling fine as opposed to feeling like I had to go all the time.

Imodium used to work like a charm for me, when my symptoms were likely "ibs" but once I entered crazy flare it didnt work a bit. I was actually shocked when I took 5 and was still pooping! Prior to flare I'd only ever need 2-3 and then I'd stop pooping for a day! My dr. Said I could go up to the daily max, but I was too afraid. I'm not currently having diarreah, just frequent formed stools on a bad day. I don't think it's a good idea to take it if you're having formed stools, I'm too afraid of constipating things and causing more troubles. I really liked the chewable imodium but they discontinued it! I liked that you didn't need to take it with water, I could use it anywhere even if I had nothing with me to drink. They have a dissolvable on the tongue kind now, but it doesn't work as well for me, so I had switched to the regular tablets, and no name brand was the same but much much less money.

For those wanting something to take when going out that is safer that Imodium, try Tums or Calcium supplements. Calcium itself has a rather constipating characteristic, but doesn't have the "oomph" of Imodium.
Also, a lot of us have bone density issues, so it doesn't hurt to get some additional Ca sometimes.

I never would have made it through high school without it. My GI always told me that as long as I am taking the recommended amount, I should be fine. Even in remission I still use it when my IBS is acting up but it gives me horrible gas pain now.

I, too, have used Immodium when traveling. Never more than 4 in a day. The next day, I was SO PLUGGED UP that I was completely miserable. It's a lose-lose, but at least it helped me get from here to there.
On the ostomy forum (or some blog), I forget exactly where, it was recommended to eat marshmallows to slow things down. Not marshmallow root, but the candy. IIRC they suggested it was the gelatin.
I have also done that, on occasion. Seemed to help a little bit.

I have not tried it but my GI recommended it to slow things down. I still haven't purchased it but I have improved so I may not get to give it a go for a while. Sounds like it might work for a lot of people.

I'd suggest getting your doctor's approval first, I think it makes a difference what your colon status is and how much of your colon is involved. Toxic megacolon risk is greatest with pancolitis.
My doctor has told me I can take up to six a day if I need it, and when I was flaring I did take it regularly.

I take one a day. I asked my GI, he said it isn't harmless (as long as I don't overdue it) and if he had to choose pred vs immodium - he would choose immodium everytime.
