Diet isn't really an iss. ue in the days right after surgery - they will give you some paperwork on what your suppose to eat. I think the only real items to avoid during ileo bag session is gassy foods.
Actually, diet is VERY important in the days and weeks after surgery. I had my proctocolectomy with end ileostomy surgery just over a year ago. If I remember correctly, I was water only for about
a day after surgery, then a liquid diet for a day or two, and then moved on to solids. They don't want you eating much/anything solid, until they are sure your bowels have woken up and you are having out put. Once you do start eating, most docs suggest a low residue diet. That pretty much means avoiding anything very fibrous, raw fruits and veggies, seeds, skins, nuts, mushrooms, popcorn...things that don't break down well when digested. I ate some veggies, but made sure they were cooked VERY well, and had applesauce, bananas or canned fruits. After about
6 weeks I started slowly adding foods in from the "be careful" list, and have had no problems yet. The biggest thing to remember is the chew everything VERY well!!
Good luck with your surgery? Are you going for a J pouch eventually? Remember to ask lots of questions and walk as much as you possibly can in the hospital. Let us know if you have any more questions.
