New to the Forum: Advice needed

Hi All - thankful to find your amazing forum. My mother was just recently diagnosed with mild UC at age 63. She spent a few days in the hospital due to extreme dehydration. She has had constant non bloody diarrhea for weeks and with the help of prednisone and Delzicol? she has seen some improvement. We are not quite sure what "type" of colitis she has at this point as it is still new. Just yesterday, after being on the meds for about 2+ weeks, she started to notice blood when going and off to the doctor we went. The doc didn't seem too concerned and was pretty certain that it was a hemorrhoid. I personally have not had experience with them, nor has she and I was wondering if any of you experienced this along your journey. She was given some cortizone suppositories to take for a week. The blood is scary to see for the first time.

My question is basically is this a normal side effect of Colitis as I don't see much in this forum about hemorrhoids. How long does the blood really last from hemorrhoids and for those of you who had this issue what have you found best get's them under control? Thanks in advance. More questions to come!

The U in UC stands for ulcerative, which basically means bleeding ulcers in the colon. If she was diagnosed with UC then the type of colitis she has is ulcerative. There can be subsets of UC. Many UC'rs deal with hemmies so it is possible she does have a hemmie but that doesn't change the fact that most all UC'rs bleed from the ulcers in the colon at some times of their disease, not all. There are several different kinds of "colitis" in which you don't have UC but if she was diagnosed with UC, then that is what she has.
