Is it normal to be on Delzicol, Azathioprine, and Remicade?

I was advised to stop taking the Delzicol because it has little benefit compared to Azathioprine and Remicade. And I read there can be some risk for blood disorders when taking Delzicol and Azathioprine together. But I think I've been feeling worse since stopping the Delzicol.

Not sure what to do now...

I guess I would feel better knowing if it was common or not to be taking all three meds together.

You can take them together. Just get bloodwork monitored.

I've read that once you need biologics, the 5ASAs or meslamine-based medications are often discontinued as they are deemed unnecessary or ineffective. That said I am still on the equivalent of all those.

Medical opinions seem all over the board on this, however, I have never heard of the combination of AZA and Delzicol bringing on blood disorders. While on AZA your blood does have to be checked on a regular basis but that is mostly due to checking liver functions and has nothing to do with Delzicol. I think some doctors believe that if the AZA and Remicade are doing the job, Delzicol shouldn't be needed. Many have taken Delzicol along with the others. I guess I would talk to your doctor about the fact that since stopping the Delzicol you feel like you have gotten worse.

Generally, there's no reason to be on mesalamine drugs (which, even though you might be taking a pill, are actually topical drugs) when you're on some of the bigger gun meds. But I agree with gary--I'm not sure there's really any reason you shouldn't be taking Delzicol with Aza. Like I said, mesalamines are topical; that's one of the reasons for the low side effects.
