Hi all,
Starting Paleo this week. I'm on Day 4. I definitely had too much fruit yesterday (something I would usually avoid, other than bananas). I also had two Nak'd bars a day (only ingredients are dates, raisins, cashews). The last two days, my stools have gone to complete bitty mush, they weren't great before, but had some formation! I'm not sure if it's the change in diet with the sudden increase of fats and lack of carbs or if it's the fruit and nuts or if I'm just following my usual downhill pattern once I come off steroids. I hate all the guesswork! I had my 5th Remicade infusion last Thursday so this shouldn't be happening. Now I'm wondering do I continue the diet without the fruit and nuts or do I just go back to my usual diet or do I switch to SCD.. It's so hard to know! I'm also taking L-Glutamine as of today.

sounds too high carb (mainly fructose). i'd cut out the nuts and dried fruit and if you need fruit, have one piece a day. i eat more fruit sometimes and it's usually noticeable the next day. also, eat starches! they will firm your poop up and are high in glucose instead of fructose.

Thanks banana girl! Do you stick to resistant starches? (I don't even know what they are!) I had sweet potato fries with my steak this evening! I'm definitely gonna scale it right back to no fruit or nuts now! Just basic SCD style intro diet for next few days ! So upsetting and disheartening - the constant diets, the constant medication and no results! :-(

In most cases I think it is a mistake to think that some brand name diet is going to work on you. It just doesn't happen in most cases. I find it interesting that you said you used to avoid fruit and then took up a diet and ate fruit. The only diet most people should follow is avoiding things you know don't work for you. According to your signature you already did SCD and I'm assuming you quit that because you felt it wasn't doing much. Now you switched to Paleo and are getting worse. It is my opinion you are completely wasting your time on these brand name diets. They are making you worse, not better.

minners, i know it's tough figuring out what works since a lot of the paleo diet is filled with fruits/veggies. the fiber definitely isn't helpful for us so that's why i stick to soluble fiber. i peel everything and cook the veggies to death when i eat them haha i don't always eat resistant starches. i made a week's worth of mashed potatoes last week and there was no way i was eating cold mashed potatoes! i drenched them in salt and butter and it was heavenly. sweet potatoes are awesome, too! not sure if you eat eggs, but i make a delicious sweet potato custard. it's great for breakfasts, snacks, or dessert and you literally just blend everything in the bender and pour in a pie pan then bake it. it's super easy and really delicious. makes my poop orange!

Hi Gary, I started SCD last year when I was flaring. Did it for over 5 weeks - within 3 days of starting it, I had gone from 15 BMs a day to 2 healthy looking BMs per day so my body does respond well to diet. However, towards the end of the 5 weeks, I cheated two days and then started to crash again, and I got too sick too quickly and went back on steroids! I thought I'd try Paleo this time but made the mistake of having pineapple, melon, blueberries, banana, stewed apple and grapes yest - ha absolute madness, what was I thinking! I'll give the diet a go (minus fruit and nuts) for another few days and see. Although, deep down, I do think my colon is too badly diseased to be helped. But I'll try anything before surgery.
Thanks for the tips BananaGirl. The sweet potato was amazing! How are you finding the simponi?

I'm not really understanding if SCD worked before why you don't just do SCD. Why would you do something different than what you know worked before? Everyone's gut needs balancing into what works best for your UC. If it's SCD that gives it the right balance I wouldn't do something different. Obviously Paleo is making you worse.

I struggled on paleo. There were so many paleo things I had to omit since I already knew I couldn't tolerate. I added back in potatoes and rice and that helped a little with the loose stools...I ended up abandoning paleo completely because I just couldn't eat enough of the food without crapping my brains out. I also was loosing too much weight. I've found good success with adding in soluable fibres. I've kept the paleo thinking as far as grass fed meats and only real, whole foods, but I couldn't go fully grain free. My body just couldn't absorb the fats by itself.

I know what you mean Gary, I wanted to try Paleo after researching as there aren't actually many differences between the two diets - mainly Paleo omits all dairy. But I think I need the healing intro stages and phases that the SCD instructs you to do. So, when I was on SCD, I didn't introduce any of the fruits, nuts for a few weeks!

don't give up on that pesky colon minner - it really does love you and wants to be around for a while -
ours bodies have an incredible ability to heal - we just need to find the right tools to help it along -
it's hard NOT to want to eat fruit - it is so yummy and full of good stuff - unless your colon is a hurtin - as you have found, there is a time for certain foods, and until your colon is in better shape, it's not now unfortunately :-(
hang in there !

Could also be from simply mis-combining the wrong foods...
