I don't see how you can safely genetically engineer probiotics with the level of understanding we have of gut bacteria or probiotics. We don't even understand what causes The disease we want the probiotics to cure.

Increasing AG production to make food supposedly cheaper will not feed the world. It isn't even close to the best way to lower prices. We throw away enough food to feed the world and waste a huge amount of farmland on making unnaturally fat livestock. All cattle are grass fed until the end of life then grain fed just to the benefit of few cuts of beef.

toomuchpoopin, did you step and/or lay on the grass? I know they say that after a couple of hours or whatever, you can do what you do but, come on now, residue doesn't just .. evaporate. It probably absorbs into the ground and guess what our feet do? .. Anyone? Yes! They absorb too! So you can only speculate that you might have gotten some of the crud from there. Plus, when our feet absorb, they go into nearby organs and our colon is one of them. :)

No, I never touch my lawn with my skin. I'm allergic to grass (not inhaling it, but skin contact=itchy rash) so I'm never barefoot on lawn and always wear gardening gloves. Hopefully that saved me from my "lawn doping" I did last summer

For a second there I thought we were going to blame the cows farting. Just remember that for every cow that gets eaten less methane gases are going into the environment. Al Gore should be happy about that.

I was half joking. I don't honestly believe that the world is going to come to an end due to cow flatulence, whether we mass produce them or not. To be honest, I don't take this thread seriously as I choose to be a normal human being and not get up on a soapbox over issues that aren't mainstream. I'm going to leave it to others to save the world and all the people in it.

I get called extreme all the time.
I bought a rooftop solar system last year and now enjoy a 7$ electric bill (minimum cost to be tied to the grid) almost every month. When i bought it everyone thought i went off the deep end.
I wasnt always this way but feel like ive been given a second chance since my healing process and feel a need to give back a little and do my part to help.
This forum has always been great comfort to me especially when i was very ill and had very little hope of ever recovering.
Sharing in my success story with others just seems like the right thing to do and making people think about what they eat is just another way for me to help them succeed or at least be as healthy as they can possibly be.

I do find it offensive logically, but not personally, when people go on about organic food (and living chemical free) as if that is the cure for IBD.

I think the mistake people make is not realizing that their remission came from an often long chain of events – and not some single issue. The journey is a whole, not a part.

As remission approaches, the body may ask loudly for organic food, or a change of location, or T'ai Chi and Yoga! This is often to balance what may have been a very unnatural, long term state of existence. People mistake the later stage of recovery for the 'cure'. Then they go on and on about that later stage, ignoring all the previous links in the journey.

Wellness comes as a result of a long chain of events - the latest links are forever being formed...

(You do very sensibly say that the previous parts of your journey gave you the chance to discover your own personal 'panacea'.)

Really hope you stay well, and continue on your way. Each have their own path.

dmacell: Just out of curiousity, how much Lialda do you take? I noticed your signature merely states that you take it once per day. I hope when the time comes you are able to get off it entirely.

Regarding this thread I kind of like how you handled yourself in it. Somehow you really didn't come across as preaching or being arrogant even though you seem to have strong beliefs on the subject. I personally hate it when people with this philosophy come across as trying their best to preach down to us that every one of us would be cured of our UC if we just went down this path, which I don't believe is true. Some have gotten this nasty disease and it doesn't have anything at all to do with our environment. I also like the fact that even though you seem to be anti-big pharma, you didn't really suggest that we should quit meds and go down this path of not needing meds and have kind of lived by example, staying on certain meds yourself during this process.

I would like to point out, and I hope you don't take as a criticism, but when you say that you "get called extreme all the time" it is because you actually do have extreme out of the mainstream thoughts on these subjects. I just wish that people with these viewpoints would acknowledge that they realize that they actually are out of the mainstream with these ideas. This doesn't necessarily mean that one side is right and one side is wrong, just that the percentage of non-believers far exceeds the percentage of believers, making their viewpoints extreme and not in the mainstream. I certainly acknowledge that the percentage of believers is growing bigger and bigger every day and there is obviously a reason for that, whether the beliefs are actually right or wrong. I also acknowledge that people with these extreme views have been responsible for occasional changes in something here and there that have been proven to be to the benefit of the planet and humans as well, not by the extremists themselves but by the mainstream.

I only take one lialda (1.2 gm) in the morning but i do tend to forget more as time goes on.
Im certainly not here to push my views on anyone, but i know when i was suffering i would have done just about anything to make that constant sick feeling stop. If i had a good day in a week where i wasnt running a low grade fever or running to the bathroom all day i would try and make sense out of it. Heck i kept a log for an entire year once of what i ate, what i weighed, how nany bms i had, and how i felt. I would write down random question for my gi for my bi weekly visits. I graphed things charted them tried making some sense out of what seemed so random.
NOTHING SEEMED TO HELP!
When i spoke to a relative of mine who was sick like me she told me of how she went on a trip to italy and didnt get sick the whole time there when she ate the local home grown food.
It got me thinking and i switched to local organic food. Believe me i had no intention of it curing me, i just needed to keep trying anything to help me feel better. After some time I started to feel better surprisingly! Thats when i figured if this was helping that changing a few other things might help even more. Making my own laundry soap, cleaning products from vinegar and baking soda, switching to soaps without sodium larel sulfate, no flouride in my toothpaste, having my amalgym fillings removed, and lots more. I watched more and more documetaries about healing the body naturally, and armed myself with knowledge. Before i knew it i was feeling great! I wanted to stop my Cimzia shots next. Took a week off for vacation when it was shot time and viola no problems started. Then eventually i was able to discontinue taking 2 lialda twice daily... Then just one. The last time i saw my gi he told me if everyone ate/lived like me he would be out of a job. We laughed and at the same time i felt maybe there was actually something to what he said.
I talked another one of my friends with psyoric arthritus into trying some of my methods and she seemed to get better as well. Not to the degree i did but she never followed it as closely either.
As time went on my wife was able to stop taking stomach medication and her alergies seemed to vanish too.
It was a win win scenerio all around.
As i said before even if my methods only help a few people a little its all werth my time and efforts.
Whew! Ranting again... I need to go to bed now because getting 8 hours of sleep is also another regiment that i follow to stay healthy.

Completely agree with you Gary. That's why I always keep an open mind because you never know what truly is right. It may be right for "perfect" health but not to "cure" something.

I hate this. Really I do. I hate the fact that nowadays meat is a lot cheaper than wholesome fruits and vegetables. It's like they're trying to make and keep us sick. :(

Its funny in that article how they interview Nestle...A company who practically steals water from communities drains their lakes and spring for almost free (a one time fee) then sells the water for more than 5000% markup. Check out the documentary "water wars"! Most interviewed in the article are part of the problem just pointing fingers at everyone else. I do agree with some of the points though.
I am way apart from mainstream, but hope one day to be joined by others who see things as I do.

1.2 grams of lialda is akin to what a homeopathic practitioner would prescribe for UC. As far as I know, there are zero studies out there showing 1.2 grams to be of benefit to anything. It is an anti-inflammatory though and might reduce some biomarkers, but for UC? Not sure man. Sounds like you got the thing under wraps. If you say are you missing doses, then it's almost like taking nothing.

Few more questions for you if you can answer.

1) What foods were you eating when you were on cimzia and the other biologics?

2) You mentioned the use of eye drops - did you have eye inflammation or something like uveitis?

There's plenty of evidence that has been generated showing that GMOs are safe. (And spare me the "but they're all funded by Monsanto!" replies. I've heard them before and while some are, many aren't.) Only one study showing that GMOs are unsafe has been published in a peer-reviewed journal, and it was retracted.

I have a PhD in plant breeding and genetics (and no, I don't work with GMOs), so therefore, I know a lot of people who also have advanced degrees in plant breeding and genetics. Most of these people don't work for ag companies, and therefore don't have any financial stake in the GMO "thing." At any rate, all of them feel that GMOs are safe.

As for someone who said (s)he didn't believe that most fruits and veggies are not GMOs, well, even the GMO "watch groups" say that most aren't. Although a lot of the website have outdated info; for example, they'll say that tomatoes are GMOs. While there was one on the market at one point, it was deemed a flop and removed from the market several years ago.
