HELP! Vacation in under two weeks!

Hello all....well, second flare up week 2.5. First on was in 2005 after Mom passed and have been fine since then thinking that I don't think I will get sick again. I was soooo wrong! I know it will always be with you but had positive thoughts for so long. : ) Well, timing couldn't be worse....started getting diarrhea so thought I would just take some Imodium thinking it was something I ate. Nope, didn't calm down. My GI doctor had since retired so trying to get into a GI doctor as a first time patient was a challenge. Found a doctor and since I haven't had a Coloscopy since 2005 she ordered a cat scan. So, have mild pancolitis (whole colon inflamed). Just peachy! : (. Well, since Thursday of last week, I have been taking 3 pills (2400 mg) of Asacol.

Didn't get a warm and fuzzy feeling with this doctor, very passive, no personality and I had to ask a lot of questions. I asked the folks about this doctor when I was in Radiology for my cat scan and they didn't feel she was very good. Got another referral from them for another GI doctor who I have an appt. with on Friday am. I pray he can help me a little more, kick up the dosage or add something to it. I was taking Colozal, Imuran and Prednisone last flare up in 2005.

Is there any advice you can give me? Why are we so tender some times after a watery BM where other times not much at all and feel pretty good? Why is it so watery and not much stool? Maybe because I am not eating the right foods or enough? I don't eat much and try to keep it simple but last weekend had three very thin slices of pizza and don't think I was affected. I just don't know if this Asacol is working or how long it takes, etc. ANY input will be greatly appreciated. I just want to be able to enjoy my vacation. SIGH? (Average 5-8 a day)

Hi, UCBGone - I'm sorry to hear about your flare! My first thought is that you probably should be taking more Asacol than you are. You should be bumped up to the max dose, which is 4800 mg.

When your flare is under control, you should always keep taking the maintenance dose of the Asacol. That is different for most everyone, depending on how you respond to it. Most of us will be on a maintenance does of mesalamine for the rest of our lives to try and stay in remission.

How did you get from taking Colozal, Imuran and Prednisone to taking Asacol? Were you taking anything during your remission?

garylouisville:  Nope, after I was done with my meds in 2005-2006 was tapered off of all of them and then never had any meds since then and have had no problems.  This is new meds that were prescribed to me last week.  I got in earlier to see the doctor for this Friday, so hopefully he can get me at a point quickly (if that is even possible) before we leave in 9 days.  :-)
